Pilbara Manganese, a subsidiary of Consmin (Consolidated Minerals Limited), is both owner and operator of the Woodie Woodie open cut manganese mine in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia, approximately 400 kilometres south east of Port Hedland.
The Woodie Woodie Mine is well known overseas for being a constant supplier of low impurity, high grade manganese. Because of this Woodie Woodie ore demands a higher price than that paid for manganese mined elsewhere. The benefit derived from Woodie Woodie manganese ore is its optimum ratios of alumina, phosphorus, silica and iron. All desirable characteristics sought by specialist producers of alloys.
Mining methods used at the Woodie Woodie Mine follow the traditional open cut method, with the ore mined from its many pits blended to maintain a reliable specification. Manganese is an element needed to guarantee ongoing global growth, as up to 90 percent is used globally by the steel industry. Manganese being particularly sought after in the creation of manganese alloys. It is an essential product for steel makers, one that can-not be substituted with the use of any other product. Its main use being the hardening and general toughening of steel. It's also sought after because of its ability to prevent oxidation and the de-sulphuring of steel.
The Woodie Woodie Mine has a 100 square kilometre corridor and a 5,500 square kilometre greenfield exploration area outside the corridor. It is mined as a series of open pits after which it is subjected to crushing, screening and separation of heavy media. It is then transported in road trains, on a sealed road, for 425 kilometres to Port Hedland from where it is shipped out to overseas customers in bulk ore carriers. The Woodie Woodie Mine has a capacity to handle 1.5 million tonnes of ore a year.
Consolidated Minerals operate the Woodie Woodie Manganese Mine with assistance from Leighton Contractors. Leightons provide general mining services in assisting mine operator, Pilbara Manganese, with the clearing the ore body of overburden from the Greensnake pit as well as several other smaller pits. The Leighton contract is for removing up to 30 million bank cubic metres of waste material. Leightons employ 150 workers at the site who keep the operation going 24 hours a day every day of the year. In completing their contract Leightons used the following equipment:
Consolidated Minerals (Consmin) have their global head quarters in Britain at Jersey. It is here where the Woodie Woodie Mine product is marketed exclusively through its marketing arm, Pilbara Trading Limited. Consmin also have a representative office in China, in Shanghai, that facilitates sales into the key Chinese steel market.
