A remarkable development is currently taking place on the Pilbara Coast in Western Australia, 12 kilometres west of Onslow in the Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area. It is the Wheatstone LNG Mega project. A liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility that has been designed and being constructed by international construction contractor Bechtel for Chevron, a world leader in clean energy production.
Wheatstone LNG Project Construction Began in December 2011
Chevron Australia, a fully owned subsidiary of Chevron, began construction on its Wheatstone LNG Project in the latter half of 2011. The first stage of the project involves the construction of two LNG trains able to produce 8.9 million tonnes of export LNG a year, as well as a 200 terajoule a day domestic gas plant. The project already has approvals to expand its LNG production to 25 million tonnes a year. The first shipment from the completed project is expected to be made in 2016.
Wheatstone LNG Project to Process Gas from OffShore Wells
The offshore facilities of the Wheatstone LNG Project will collect and partially process the gas from its subsea gas wells and deliver it onshore where the processing is completed. The offshore development includes the well infrastructure and necessary subsea installations as well as a gas processing platform above 73 metres of water. A 225 kilometre trunkline takes the gas from the platform to the onshore facilities at Ashburton North near Onslow.
The onshore plant includes a slug-catcher that separates the gas from the liquid, the two train LNG processing facility, a pipeline that connects the Onslow plant to the existing Dampier/Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline, as well as LNG and condensate storage. The marine facilities include a shipping channel where big ships can be turned around, a material offloading facility and an export jetty.
Wheatstone LNG Project is a Joint Venture Development
The Wheatstone LNG Project is a joint venture operation that includes; Chevron Australia, a subsidiary of Chevron, which holds a 64.14 percent interest, Apache with 13 percent interest, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company that has a seven percent holding, Shell with 6.4 percent, Kyushu Electric Power Company 1.46 percent, along with PE Wheatstone Pty Ltd in which TEPCO has an eight percent interest.
Up to 80 percent of the Wheatstone LNG Project's initial capacity will be fed from the Lago and Wheatstone gas fields that are both majority owned and operated by Chevron.
Wheatstone LNG Project Workforce Accommodated at the new Wheatstone Village at Onslow
The Wheatstone LNG Project construction workforce is accommodated at the new Wheatstone Village built near Onslow. The village is able to accommodate up to 5,000 residents who each have air-conditioned rooms with a private ensuite bathroom, a king sized single bed and flat screen television. Each room has free Foxtel and free internet available. The village also incorporates dining venues, taverns and BBQ areas, gymnasiums, athletic track etc.
At the moment basic retail facilities are available where the employees and contractors housed at the Wheatstone Accommodation Village are able to purchase personal items, ice creams, magazines and snacks. A larger retail store is in the process of being built. ATM and EFTPOS banking facilities are available in the taverns and at the village reception office. A fully staffed medical centre is available for 24 hours every day of the year.
