The large Watermark coal mining project in north west New South Wales, that is being proposed by Shenhua Australia Holdings Pty Ltd and ShenhuaWatermark Coal Pty Ltd, is one step closer to becoming a reality after itreceived recommendation for approval from the NSW Planning Assessment Commission (PAC).

Final Watermark Approval Depends on Solving Water Issues

The PAC report stated the proposed mine was considered approvable although it still had concerns regarding the water modelling and thecompany's plans to mine plains containing highly fertile black soil. It said the uncertainty surrounding the water concerns required solving before a final approval could be awarded.

Watermark Mine Project Located in Rich Agricultural Plain

The huge Watermark open cut coal mining project, that is located on theagriculturally rich Liverpool Plains area of New South Wales, will produce10 million tonnes of coal a year, an issue that has been raised by somelocal people, including some farmers and environmentalists, who claim themine will impact negatively on ground water and other environmentallysensitive matters, especially the local koala population.

Watermark Coal Project Owned by Shenhua Group

Shenhua Australia Holdings Pty Ltd and Shenhua Watermark Coal Pty Ltdare wholly owned subsidiary companies of Shenhua Overseas Development and Investment Company Limited which, in turn, is owned by the giant Chinese organisation, Shenhua Group Corporation Limited otherwise known as the Shenhua Group. The Shenhua Group is the largest coal supplier in the world. Its business activities around the world employ more than 214,000 people in turning coal into chemicals, turning coal into liquids, shipping of coal, operation of ports for loading and unloading coal, transporting coal by rail, the generation of power and the marketing and production of coal. Shenhua Australia is new to the Australian coal mining industry.

Watermark Coal Project to Have a Life of Mine of 30 Years

The Watermark project is located about three kilometres west of the townof Breeza and 25 kilometres south east of the regional centre of Gunnedah. The mine site is about 282 kilometres, by rail, from the port ofNewcastle. The Watermark open cut coal mining project will have a life ofmine of 30 years at a production level of 10 million tonnes of ROM (runof-mine)coal a year. Mining will require a fleet of excavators and ropeshovels that will load haulage trucks. Other machinery will include blasthole drills, graders and dozers as well as water carts.

Infrastructure construction at the Watermark coal mining project willinclude a coal handling and preparation plant to enable the processing ofthe raw coal on site, workshops, an administration building, a train loadout facility, a railway loop and spur line that connects to the existing railway to Newcastle, a mine access road off the Kamilaroi Highway that will incorporate an overpass over the railway spur line, water reticulation and water management infrastructure, as well as electricity and communication infrastructure.

The Watermark project will require 600 full time workers during theconstruction stage and around 434 permanent workers when the minebecomes operational.
