The Tipton West Project , that is wholly owned by Arrow energy Pty Ltd, is located 20 kilometres south of the south-east Queensland town of Dalby in the coal seam gas rich Surat Basin. The first commercial gas sold from the Tipton West gas field was purchased, under contract, to be used as fuel for the Braemar power stations, in February 2007.
Tipton West Project Began by Supplying Coal Seam Gas to Domestic Power Stations
From its beginning, the Tipton West Project had a 15 year contract to supply 6.0 petajoules of coal seam gas (CSG) a year to the Braemar 1 Power Station and another 15 year contract to supply 3.5 petajoules annually to the Braemar 2 Power Station. It also supplies gas to the Swanbank E Power Station.
Tipton West Project has the Potential to be Australia's Largest Onshore Coal Seam Gas Field
At the end of the 2009/10 financial year the Tipton West CSG wells were producing 11.10 petajoules a year, an increase of nine percent over the previous financial year. Coal seam gas production for the quarter ended June 30, 2010 was 2.71 petajoules. The Tipton West Project is believed to have the potentiality to host the largest on shore coal seam gas field in Australia. The Tipton West Project's gas processing facility is owned and operated by APA Group that charges Arrow Energy a tolling fee to process the raw gas extracted from its Tipton West wells.
Tipton West Gas Field is Part of Arrows Surat Gas Project
The Tipton West coal seam gas field is part of Arrow Energy's larger Surat Gas Project area that is designed to increase both domestic and export gas production to be put through the proposed Arrow LNG Plant on Curtis Island at Gladstone. The Surat Gas Project covers all Arrow Energy's existing gas producing wells at Tipton West as well as those at Daandine, Stratheden and Kogan North. It will also take in the area from Dalby to Wandoan and south to Goondiwindi and Millmerran, where Arrow Energy hold environmental approvals for exploration purposes as well as petroleum tenure.
The Arrow Surat Gas Project development area is about 160 kilometres west of Brisbane and covers around 8,600 square kilometres of mainly agricultural land. The major towns in the area are Dalby, Miles, Millmerran, Cecil Plains, Kogan and Chinchilla. The infrastructure used in the project will include the coal seam gas producing wells as well as the processing and compression facilities. These facilities will be constructed throughout the project area but not within the town precincts, however, supporting facilities like that of storage depots and offices will be located within the various towns. To facilitate management of the project the Arrow Surat Gas Project has been divided into five zones, these being: Goondiwindi, Millmerran-Kogan, Dalby, Chinchilla and Wandoan.
Arrow, is the Surat Gas and Tipton West project proponent. Arrow is a Queensland based company wholly owned by Arrow Energy Holdings Pty Ltd, an equally shared joint venture entity belonging to Royal Dutch Shell that operates one of the worlds largest LNG carrier fleets, and PetroChina, a subsidiary of the Chinese state owned China National Petroleum Corporation, one of the largest oil companies in the world. The joint venture partners took ownership of Arrow in August, 2010. Royal Dutch Shell have had a prominent presence in Australia since 1901 as the Shell Oil Company.
