The Springsure Creek underground coal mine, 47 kilometres south east of Emerald, in the Bowen Basin region of Queensland, is scheduled to begin commercial production of thermal coal for the export market in mid-2015. The project is being developed by Bandanna Energy Limited, a company that also has a 14 percent interest un the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal at Gladstone.

Springsure Creek Mine to Last for 40 Years
The Springsure Creek underground mining operation is expected to last for 40 years with peak production reaching 11 million tonnes of export quality thermal coal a year. The project is being progressed by Springsure Creek Coal Pty Ltd a fully owned subsidiary of Bandanna Energy Limited.

Springsure Creek Mine to Make Bandanna Energy Australia's Newest Coal Producer
Bandanna Energy Limited has, until now, been active in exploration, evaluation and development of PCI (pulverised coal injection) and thermal coal assets in Queensland. It is now poised to become Australia's newest coal producer. The company is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and owns considerable coal tenements in both the Galilee and Bowen Basins in Queensland.

Ausenco Limited Wins Contract to Advise on Springsure Creek Mine Development
Bandanna Energy Limited has awarded a contract to Ausenco Limited to provide the Springsure Creek project with engineering and management support services. Ausenco has been given the responsibility to prepare a plan to outline the engineering budget, schedule and execution phases required to allow Bandanna Energy to design and cost the project by mid 2014 with commercial production of coal commencing in mid-2015.

Springsure Creek Mine to Produce 11 Million Tonnes of Coal a Year by 2012
The first stage of the Springsure Creek project includes a single underground longwall that will have the capacity to produce 5.5 million tonnes of thermal coal a year. Stage two will involve a second longwall that will lift production to 11 million tonnes of coal a year by 2021.

Public Roads Lead to Springsure Creek Surface Infrastructure
The Springsure Creek underground thermal coal mine will be accessed by public roads from Emerald. These roads are the Kilmore, Wyntoon and Glenorina Roads and the Gregory Highway. The roads lead to the mine surface infrastructure area that includes the mine administration buildings.

The Springsure Creek mine will require a workforce of 350 personnel during its construction phase, 585 people during its operational period and 40 during decommissioning. The coal mined from the Springsure Creek mine will be taken to a rail load out facility at the Triumph Creek site to be loaded onto railway wagons that will take it along the Bauhinia Branch Line and the Blackwater railway system to the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal at Gladstone from where it will be exported.

The surface infrastructure required at the Springsure Creek project will include the following; a coal haulage industrial area, overhead powerlines, coal handling plant, water treatment plant, sewage treatment plant, environmental dams, raw water dams, and a dewatering dam, rescue and emergency area, fuelling area, warehouse, workshop, bathhouse, administration buildings, internal road network and a mine infrastructure area.

The government has approved the Environmental Impact Statement prepared by the company for the Springsure Creek project and it is now proceeding to the next stage.
