The Ravensworth West coal mine was part of Xstrata's Ravensworth operations for five years. It started production in 2006 and closed up shop in 2011. It was part of the Ravensworth surface Operations that included the Namara and Ravensworth North mines as well as the Cumnock mine that consisted of an open cut and underground operation. The Cumnock mine has been placed on care and maintenance.
The Ravensworth West Mine began mining thermal coal at the same time
as the Namara mine till the deposit it was mining ran out of economically viable coal in 2011 and all mining there ceased. Coal mining is continuing at the Ravensworth North Mine.
