The Port Spencer new multi user deep water port to be developed by Centrex Metals Limited and WISCO in a 50 percent each joint venture partnership,on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, will be used for the export of bulk commodities produced in the region including grain and iron ore.
Port Spencer Jetty Reduced to 200 Metres
Port Spencer's initial design was for a 515 metre long jetty to be constructed into deep enough water that would be capable of loading Cape class vessels irrespective of the tide at the time. A port capable of accommodating Panamax berthing, cargo ships with a carrying capacity of between 65,000 and 80,000 tonnes. However, new transhipment technology now available and already in use in the loading of CSL Australia' iron ore shipments out of Whyalla, has enabled the jetty to be reduced to 200 metres. This reduction of length along with a simplified point ship loader still gives the new port the ability to accommodate regional export volumes by means of larger transhipper arrangements. The new generation of transhippers is achieving unrivaled loading performances while at the same time offering reliability and simplicity for bulk loading, including that of floating cranes. Port Spencer doesn't require any dredging and is sited in an area that is protected from extreme weather conditions.
Port Spencer Given Major Project Status
Stage one of the Port Spencer project has received both Federal and State government approvals. Stage two, that includes the infrastructure required for the handling of magnitite concentrate, was given Major Project status by the South Australian Government in May 3013.
Port Spencer Joint Venture Involves Centrex Metals and Wuhan Iron and Steel Company
Centrex Metals Limited have entered into a 50/50 joint venture agreement with Chinese company Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Company (WISCO), to develop the Port Spencer facilities as part of the infrastructure needed to progress its iron ore mining interests in the region, such as the Bungalow, Cockabidnee and Greenpatch tenements, among others. Centrex Metals Limited became incorporated on 2001 for the purposes of exploring for iron ore deposits on the South Australian Eyre Peninsular.
Centrex Metals Limited acquired South Australian Iron Ore Group (SAIOG) and as a result have taken over a number of iron ore exploration licences on the Eyre Peninsula covering more than 2,000 square kilometres. The company was listed on the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange) in July 2006 and soon after became closely associated with WISCO and another Chinese company, Baotou Iron and Steel Group Company Limited (Baotou), with who it signed off-take agreements for Centrex's proposed Wilgerup hematite deposit.
Wilgerup Project Deferred While Port Spencer is Progressed
Up until 2010 Centrex Metals Limited had been focusing on the development of the Wilgerup hematite project but it lacked a port to ship its product out of. It was therefore decided to delay the progression of the Wilgerup mine so its development would coincide with the development of the Port Spencer project that it began working on in 2009.
The Australian Governments approval to proceed with the Port Spencer project also included the construction of a desalination plant at the site to provide water to the company's proposed magnitite iron ore projects in the area. A separate application has been filed covering the Fusion magnetite mining project, pipeline and ore processing plant. Centrex's flagship project that it shares as a joint venture with Wuhan Iron and Steel Company.
