The PNG LNG Project remains on schedule to deliver its first liquified natural gas (LNG) product to the export market in China and Japan by mid-2014 as previously planned. The project is a 6.9 million tonne a year of LNG project that will be operated by Esso Highlands Limited, a subsidiary company of ExxonMobil Corporation. Gas for the project is being sourced from the Juha, Angore and Hides gas fields as well as from associated gas in the Gobe Main, Moran and Agogo oil fields.
PNG LNG Project to Produce Nine Trillion Cubic Feet of Natural gas Over 30 Years
It is predicted the PNG LNG Project will produce more than 200 million barrels of associated liquids along with 9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas during the projects 30 year life span. Gas from the fields will be conditioned in the Papua New Guinea Highlands before it is taken by a gas pipeline to the liquefied natural gas plant for further processing prior to it being loaded onto ocean going tankers for export to the company's international customers.
PNG LNG Project Onshore and Offshore Pipelines now Complete
It was announced in March 2014 that the 292 kilometre onshore pipeline taking the gas from the PNG Highlands to the coast had been completed by the onshore pipeline contractor SpieCapag. This pipeline will take the gas from the Hides Gas Conditioning Facility to the Omati River where it will be connected to the 407 kilometre offshore pipeline that has already been completed by contracting company Saipem. The offshore pipeline takes the gas to the LNG Processing Plant and Marine Facility being built by contractors JGC and Chiyoda at Caution Bay, on the Central Province's south coast, 20 kilometres north west of Port Moresby.
The recently completed onshore pipeline rises to a height of 2,100 metres above sea level on its way to the coast and was constructed in challenging conditions containing steep terrain, high rainfall, remote locations and large areas of flooded swampland. The construction of the pipeline has taken four years to complete employing over 5,000 Papua New Guinea workers recruited from local communities from Hides to Omati. The onshore pipeline ranges in diameter from 34 to 32 inches.
PNG LNG Project Upstream Infrastructure Completed
The upstream infrastructure of the PNG LNG Project has already been completed by contractors Clough Curtin Brothers as a joint venture. CBI Clough Joint venture partners are currently constructing the Hides Wellpads and Hides Gas Conditioning Plant. Nabors Drilling continues to carry out drilling activities concerning the project. The Komo airfield servicing the project has been completed by McConnell Dowell and Consolidated Contractor Group, the airfield is 3.2 kilometres long, making it the largest runway in Papua New Guinea.
PNG LNG Project Long Term gas Agreements Signed
Gas produced from the PNG LNG Project is to be supplied to four major customers under long term contracts. These companies being; CPC Corporation, The Tokyo Electric Power Company Incorporated, Osaka Gas Company Limited and China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec).
The PNG LNG Project is a Joint Venture LNG producing and marketing
operation that involves the following companies: ExxonMobil, which is also the operator, has a 33.2 percent interest in the project, Oil Search (PNG) Limited has 29 percent, National Petroleum Company of PNG (PNG Government) holds 16.8 percent, Nippon Oil has 4.7 percent and MRDC (Papua New Guinea landowners) holds a 2.8 percent interest.
