Southern Iron Pty Ltd is a fully owned subsidiary of Arrium Mining. It was incorporated as a company in 2006 and although based in Sydney, it is the owner of Arrium Mining's Southern Iron flagship project, the Peculiar Knob high grade DSO hematite mine, located 90 kilometres south east of Coober Pedy in South Australia.

Southern Iron Acquired Peculiar Knob Mine in 2011

The Peculiar Knob project was acquired by Arrium Mining from WPG Resources in 2011, other assets acquired with the purchase included; the Buzzard and Tui DSO hematite deposits and the Hawks Nest magnetite deposit, as well as the Mt Brady and Windy Valley tenements.

MACA Awarded Contract to Operate the Peculiar Knob Mine

The mining contract to develop the Peculiar Knob mine was awarded to mining and civil construction company, MACA Limited in August 2011. MACA Limited has a workforce of more than a thousand personnel who carry out material haulage, screening, crushing, civil earthworks and contract mining requirements for its numerous customers throughout Australia.

The Peculiar Knob mining contract awarded to MACA Limited extends to June 2017, a period of six years. In that time MACA will undertake all the mining, crushing, screening and train loading requirements at the mine site. MACA employs around 125 mining personnel and about 20 other employees carrying out the crushing and train loading work at the site.

GWA Awarded Contract to Transport Peculiar Knob ore to Port Pirie for Export

The contract to transport the ore by rail from the Peculiar Knob mine site to the bulk export facility at Port Pirie in South Australia, was awarded to GWA (Genesee and Wyoming Australia). The contract is for GWA to transport around 3.3 million tonnes of hematite ore from the Peculiar Knob Mine annually. The ore transportation began in 2012 and it operates from a siding near the remote South Australian town of Wirrida to the Port Pirie export terminal. The initial contract is to last a minimum of five years and is to be extended for a further period if it is decided that other iron ore sites in the area are to be developed at a later date.

Peculiar Knob Mine to Contribute 3.3 Million Tonnes a Year To Arrium Mining's Throughput

The addition of ore mined from the Peculiar Knob mine has justified the decision of Arrium Mining to double its Whyalla port capacity to around 13 million tonnes a year, as although the Peculiar Knob mine will add around 3.3 million tonnes a year to the total throughput, the blending of this ore with that from Arrium Mining's lower grade Middleback Ranges mines, will effectively increase the total throughput by an extra five million tonnes annually. Besides being an exporter of hematite iron ore, Arrium Mining also produces iron ore feed used at its Whyalla steelworks.

Besides Southern Iron's Peculiar Knob mine operating nearly 100 kilometres south of Coober Pedy, Arrium Mining also mine iron ore from the Middleback Ranges located 60 kliometres from Whyalla.
