The NRE No 1 coal mine in the Southern coalfields of New South Wales is owned by Indian company, Gujarat NRE Coking Coal Limited, through its fully owned subsidiary Gujarat NRE Australia. It acquired the colliery, formerly known as the South Bulli Colliery, in 2004. The colliery has reserves of 92 million tonnes and resources totalling 315 million tonnes of coking coal within a 6,421 hectare area.
NRE No 1 Colliery in Close Proximity to all Services
The NRE No 1 colliery is located 10 kilometres north of the major NSW industrial city of Wollongong and 60 kilometres south of Sydney. The high quality coal mined at the NRE No 1 Mine is taken to the nearby port terminal at Port Kembla by truck from where it is exported to India for use in Gujarat NRE Coke's, own coke oven operations.
NRE No 1 Returns to Long Wall Mining Techniques
The NRE No 1 Colliery mines coal through its underground operation from the Tongara, Wongawill, Balgownie and Bulli coal seams. The company initially undertook mining of these seams by means of the pillar extraction method as against the seams previously being mined via long wall mining techniques, as it believed the pillar extraction method increased recovery levels. However, it recently converted back to long wall mining having purchased new long wall mining equipment.
Most Mining at NRE No 1 has Focused on the Bulli and Wongawilli Coal Seams
Up until now most mining undertaken at the NRE No 1 Mine has been focused on the Bulli seam leaving the Wongawilli and Balgownie seams relatively untouched. The company has recently received NSW government approval to upgrade its infrastructure to allow it to continuing mining of one million tonnes of coking coal a year from the Wongawilli and Bulli coal seams for three years. The approval also approves the extra coal to be transportation by truck to the Port Kembla coal terminal and the upgrading of infrastructure and surface facilities at the site.
Gujarat NRE own two Hard Coking Coal Mines in the Same Area
Gujarat NRE Coking Coal Limited owns and operates two hard coking coal mine in the Southern Coal Fields of NSW. The other mine is the NRE Wongawilli Colliery. Together, the two mines have coal reserves of 125 million tonnes and coal resources of 651 million tonnes. This gives them a mine life of more than 30 years based on current production levels. Gujarat NRE Coke Limited, the parent company, is an Indian public listed company, the largest independent manufacturer of metallurgical coke in the sub-continent. It is the leading supplier of coke to the Indian market as well as selling coke to the Japan, Malaysia, South Africa and Brazil markets.
Mining at NRE No 1 Began in 1887
Mining at the NRE No 1 mine has been taking place since 1887 and many different mining techniques have used during that time. Most of the lease area houses coal seams below the Woronora Plateau west of the escarpment. This Russell Vale site is bounded by Corrimal to its south, the residential areas of Russell Vale to its north and the Princess Highway to its east.
Expansion Program to Lift Production at NRE No 1 Mine
An expansion project is currently underway that proposes to continue underground mining at the NRE No 1 Colliery and increase production to
three million tonnes a year for the next 18 years. This program involves the construction of new infrastructure as well as the upgrading of existing facilities. The underground mining expansion will involve multiple long wall mining the Wonga East coal seam with nine long walls and the Wonga West coal seam with seven long wall operations.
