The final terms of reference regarding the proposed New Lenton coal mining project, located 120 kilometres south west of Mackay, in Central Queensland, has now been completed and an Environmental Impact Statement is currently being compiled by project owner New Hope.

New Lenton Project Managed by New Lenton Coal Pty Ltd

The New Lenton Project is being managed by New Lenton Coal Pty Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of New Hope Corporation Limited. The company has already been granted lease approval to mine up to two million tonnes a year of ROM (run-of-mine) coal at the site. It had been proposed that mining on this part of the site would begin in 2016. Once all approvals are granted for the remaining leases, production at the New Lenton coal project would be increased to eight million tonnes annually. The obtaining of these remaining leases would allow New Hope's coal mining tenement holdings at the site to cover a total area of 4,895 hectares.

The New Lenton coal mining project is to be developed adjacent to the Issac River 20 kilometres south of the town of Glenden, 65 kilometres north west of Nebo and 65 kilometres north of Moranbah, in the Issac Municipality of Central Queensland.

New Lenton CHPP to Produce Five Million Tonnes of Coal a Year for 25 Years

It is proposed to mine the New Lenton open cut operation in the conventional manner by using truck and shovel methods. All coal mined at the site is to be processed in a new CHPP (coal handling and preparation plant) that will be expected to produce up to five million tonnes of coking and thermal coal for export annually, for the next 25 years.

Waste from the processing of raw coal in the CHPP will initially be disposed of by storing it in a disposal dam that will be especially built for that purpose. All such waste will eventually be stored in-pit once sufficient space has become available.

Stockpiled coal will be either trucked from the site to an off-site train load out facility or loaded directly into railway wagons on-site. Once the wagons are loaded the coal will be taken to either the Abbot Point or Dalrymple Bay coal export terminal to be exported to overseas customers.

On-site infrastructure required at the New Lenton Project will include to construction of haulage roads, amenity and administration buildings, equipment laydown areas, wash bays, a warehouse, maintenance workshop, fuel farm, waste rock emplacements, coal stockpile areas, potable and sewage water treatment plants, flood protection and water storage.

New Lenton Project to Employ 200 Construction Workers

The construction stage of the New Lenton coal mining project will take between one and two years to complete and create up to 200 jobs. Once operational the mine will employ about 300 people in a full time capacity.

The New Hope Group is an Australian owned energy company that has been operating is south east Queensland for over 60 years. In 2011 New Hope Group sold 10 percent of the New Lenton Project to a subsidiary of, Mai-Lao Power Corporation, Formosa Plastics Group.
