The Murchison Goldfield in Western Australia is located about 600 kilometres north east of Perth, south east of Cue. It is owned by Silver Lake Resources, a gold exploration and producing company based solely in Western Australia.

Murchison Goldfields Consists of Three Gold Mining Projects

Silver Lakes Resources Murchison Goldfield consists of three major mining projects; the Moyagee, Comet and Tuckabianna, that, at June 2014, had a JORC gold bearing resource totalling 13.7 million tonnes grading at 2.2 grams a tonne that would be expected to deliver around one million ounces of gold.

Silver Lakes Resources Core Gold Mining Operation is at Mount Monger

Silver Lakes Resources core gold mine is the Mount Monger mine in Western Australia that is a high margin operation located 50 kilometres south east of Kalgoorlie, in the Eastern Goldfields.

However, continuing low gold prices have wrought havoc with gold miners in recent years and Silver Lakes Resources is no exception. As a result all gold mining operations at the Murchison Goldfield have been placed on care and maintenance.

Gold Production Commenced at the Murchison Goldfield in 2013

Silver Lakes Resources began production at the Murchison Goldfield in February, 2013, commercial production began in June 2013, just four months later. The fall in world gold prices started taking effectmidway through 2013 causing Silver Lakes Resources to defer paying capital to access higher grades of ore at the Murchison operation that existed in underground reserves. Instead, the company decided to focus its efforts on lower grade open pit reserves. This action resulted in disappointing unit and production costs and it was then decided to focus attention on the higher value lower risk Mount Monger mining operation.

Murchison Goldfield Placed on Care and Maintenance in 2014

A strategic review of the companies Murchison Goldfield operations took place on January 20, 2014. On February 27, 2014, almost a month later, it was announced that the Murchison Goldfield operations were to be placed on care and maintenance, costing 42 jobs, as continuing gold production at Murchison was clearly unsustainable at the world gold prices being offered at that time. The company announced it would resume mining at the Murchison Golodfield in the event a higher sustainable gold price returned.

Silver Lakes Resources Closes its Lakewood Mill

In July 2014 Silver Lakes Resources also decided to cut further jobs when it closed its Lakewood Mill. Ore remaining to be processed was to be taken 65 kilometres south east of Kalgoorlie to be processed at Randalls Mill. The gold circuit was soon stripped from the abandoned Lakewood Mill.

Ironically, soon after the decision to close the Lakewood Mill was made it was revealed that Silver Lake gold sales for the year were better than expected.
