The Mulga Rock Uranium Project is located on the western end of theGreat Victoria Desert, 240 kilometres east-north-east of Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia. It is in the process of being developed by Vimy Resources Limited, a resource development company based in Perth, that was prevously known as Energy Minerals Australia.

Plans Well Advanced for the Development of the Mulga Rock Uranium Project

Development of the Mulga Rock Uranium Project, to date, has involved the design of a processing plant, an airstrip, accommodation camp, access roads, tailings storage facilities and waste rock dumps. It is planned to operate the mine as an open cut operation extracting ore from four separate deposits, namely; Shogun, Emperor, Ambassador and Princess. It is expected to have a mine of life of around 12 years producing uranium oxide concentrate that would be shipped overseas from either the port of Adelaide or the port of Darwin. It is proposed to produce 1,300 tonnes of uranium oxide a year throughout its productive life.

Mulga Rock Uranium Deposits are Located in a Remote Region

The Mulga Rock shallow pit mining operations will all extract contained uranium from carbonaceous ore bodies. The processing of all mined ore will be undertaken at the one central on-site processing plant. The project area covers 90,190 hectares of unallocated crown land, consisting mainly of sand dunes, in one of the most remote regions of Australia. Access to the site at the present time is only posible by four wheel drive vehicles and the nearest populated area is at Laverton, which is 200 kilometres to its north west. The remote Pinjin Station Homestead is 100 kilometres to the project's west and the Coonana Aboriginal Community is located 130 kilometres to its south south west. The Tropicana gold mine is situated 110 kilometres north east of the Mulga Rock uranium deposits and the Kanandah Station Homestead is about 150 kilometres to its south east.

Mulga Rock Uranium to be Transported to the Port by Road Transport

It is planned to mine around 3.5 million tonnes of ore a year that will be crushed, beneficiated ( the separation of different minerals) and processed, with the use of an on site acid leach and precipitation plant. Other metal concentrates included in the mined ore will be recovered using sulphide precipitation after all the uranium has been removed. These metals will notbe radioactive and will be sold separately. Uranium produced at the Mulga Rock mine, when it becomes operational, will be placed in drums before being placed in sealed sea containers and taken to the chosen port by road transport where the sea containers will be loaded onto ships for delivery to overseas customers.

Infrastructure to be constructed at the Mulga Rock Project Site will include a diesel powered power plant with a capacity to produce up to 12 megawatts of electricity. The tapping of a saline water borefield and a mine reinjection borefield along with all the necessary pipelines, communication systems and a waste water treatment plant.

The Mulga Rock Uranium Project is expected to produce Uranium (78 percent), nickel (nine percent), cobalt (eight percent) and scandium (two percent).
