The Mt Kare Gold Project is located in Papua New Guinea, 600 kilometres west of Port Moresby and only 15 kilometres from the world class Barrick Gold owned, Porgera Gold Mine, that contains a resource of 25 million ounces of gold. The world class gold belt that includes the Mt Kare deposit and the Porgera Gold Mine contains a reported, 150 million ounces of gold. The Mt Kare gold exploration licence covers a 220 square kilometre area of the same gold belt.

Mt Kare Gold Project is Owned by Indochine Mining Limited

The exploration licence covering the Mt Kare gold deposit is owned by Papua New Guinea registered mining company, Summit Development Limited. Summit Development Limited is, in turn, fully owned by Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) listed, Indochine Mining Limited.

Gold Discovered at Mt Kare in 1987

Gold mineralisation was first discovered at Mt Kare in 1987 by CRA, the giant mining company now known as Rio Tinto. For the next three years a considerable amount of illegal gold mining occurred at the site and it has been estimated that more than one million ounces of gold would have been taken from the area. Since that time various companies have carried out exploration programs and alluvial mining has taken place there for the following 23 years, however, ongoing disagreements with local landholders prevented development of any larger scale. In 2008 the then owners of the Mt Kare gold prospect were placed in administration.

Indochine Acquire Mt Kare From Summit in 2011

The Mt Kare Project remained in a state of limbo for the next three years, until the Papua New Guinea government transferred the exploration licence over the area to Summit, which at that stage was a company owned by a Papua New Guinea family. Indochine Mining Limited acquired the Mt Kare exploration lease when it acquired Summit in April, 2011.

Access to Mt Kare Project Site Being Improved

Access to the Mt Kare Project is gained via aircraft to the Mt Hagen airport and then a further 145 kilometres to the site by helicopter. A flight that takes about an hour. A six kilometre vehicle track that is being built from the Mt Kare Project site to the Enga Highway will be completed in early 2015. This track will link the project site to the Porgara mine and act as a much needed supply route.

There is a 100 personnel accommodation camp at the Mt Kare Project site with its own power supply. Communication with the outside world is provided via satellite. Water is obtained from nearby creeks and potable water is collected from rainwater and stored. There are medical facilities provided at the site which has an emergency evacuation plan.

ACM is Mt Kare's Main Contracting Company

The main contractor involved on the Mt Kare Project is, Australian Contract Mining Pty Ltd (ACM), a specialist underground mining contracting company and exploration drillers. The other contracting company involved is GREngineering Services. ACM is in the process of transporting the following equipment to the project site:
  • Four sea containers containing consumables and spare parts
  • A Sandvik LH517 loader
  • A Sandvik two boom jumbo drill rig and
  • A Liebherr 944 tunnelling excavator
  • Mt Kare to be a low Cost Gold Producer

Indochine Mining Limited is planning to rapidly develop the Mt Kare underground gold mine to enable it to produce 200,000 ounces a year of gold from ore, grading at 10 grams of gold to a tonne, at mining costsbelieved to be the lowest in the industry.
