The McPhillamys gold mining project is located, 250 kilometres west of Sydney, 30 kilometres west of Bathurst and 35 kilometres south-east of Orange, in the Central West Region of New South Wales. The McPhillamys project area consists of three exploration licences that total 420 square kilometres in two different locations located 25 kilometres from each other.

Regis Resources Acquired McPhillamys Project off Newmont and Alkane Resources in 2012

Regis Resources Limited, a public company based in Perth and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), acquired the McPhillamys project from joint venture partners, Alkane Resources Limited and Newmont Exploration Pty Ltd, in November, 2012. Regis Resources has developed mid-sized gold mining projects in both Australia and Africa.

McPhillamys Gold Mine Would Have a Life of Mine of up to 10 Years

The McPhillamys project hosts a JORC compliant gold resource of 2.5 million ounces that is contained in a 57.4 million tonnes ore body grading at 1.36 grams a tonne. The project, that is a medium term development opportunity for Regis Resources to add to its existing Western Australian gold mining operations, was to be in production by 2016 but this has been held up because of the difficulty in getting sufficient water supplied to the project and the sustained low world price of gold. There is approximately 10 years of gold reserves at the McPhillamys site with promising regional exploration potential that could extend the estimated life of mine.

Regis Resources put McPhillamys Development on Backburner

In July, 2014, Regis Resources announced it had decided to not proceed with the carrying out of a feasibility study into the development of the McPhillamys gold mining project, at least not in the near term. This decision was made because of a 20 percent drop in the world gold price since it purchased the project as well as the difficulty it was having securing a a long term access to sufficient water to allow it to carry out processing. Despite these statements the company also claimed the McPhillamys gold mining project could still prove to be viable if the infrastructure problems could be overcome.

McPhillamys Mine Could Create Over 500 Jobs for Residents of Orange

When conditions become more suitable for Regis Resources to develop theMcPhillamys project to the production stage, it will be capable of creating 150 jobs that would be sourced from the local population at Orange, along with a further 500 indirect jobs. The construction stage of the McPhillamysgold mine is expected to employ around 200 people that would tradespeople and others with no direct mining experience. The company has announced it does not intend to employ any fly-in-fly-out workers.

Regis Resources is currently preparing data for the submission of an Environmental Impact Statement Approval before the end of 2015.
