Maxwells Inglewood underground gold mine in Central Victoria, 195 kilometres north west of Melbourne, retains all the charm of bygone days as a small team of miners descend down the shaft in the early morning light, to spend their day manipulating hand held drills and digging away at rocks in virtual torchlight, 150 metres below the surface. The ore they free up is taken away in rusty old carts on a narrow gauge rail.

Maxwell Inglewood Gold Mine is a Little Piece of Yesteryear
This little piece of yesteryear is known as the Inglewood Project, or Maxwells Inglewood Gold Mine. It is both owned and operated by a subsidiary of GBM Gold Limited, the Inglewood Gold Mining Company.

Maxwells Reef has two Highly Mineralised Zones
GBM has been focusing on the Maxwells reef that has two highly mineralised zones known as the Max North Shoot and the Max Shoot. Gold mining has been taking place in the area for more than 100 years and grades of 60 grams a tonne have not been unusual. GBM are mining the Maxwells Inglewood deposit with an expectation of realising an average production of between 13 and 15 grams a tonne.

Maxwells Inglewood Processing Plant has Been Upgraded and Refurbished
The company has, in recent years, upgraded and refurbished the Maxwells Inglewood gold processing plant that is also on site. This gold ore treatment facility uses the gravity recovery method to recover free gold as well as utilising a cyanide leach circuit in order to recover any gold that needs chemical release.

Asian Backers Guarantee Maxwells Inglewood Mines Future
The Maxwells Inglewood Gold Mine is a small operation but is fortunate to have Asian backers who are willing to trickle exploration money into the project to build on its already indicated Resource of 600,000 ounces of gold. The current exploration targets are expected to provide sufficient resources to keep the processing plant busy for at least another 10 years. The goldfield has already produced around 130,000 ounces of gold down to a depth of about 100 metres. The deepest shafts rarely go further than 300 metres.

Inglewood is Part of the Famous Golden Triangle
The Inglewood district of Victoria has been at the centre of the state's gold mining ever since the famous Victorian gold rush of the 1850's through to the 1860's. In later years gold interest in the area was once again aroused when the 'Hand of Faithî nugget was discovered at nearby Kingower in 1980. Inglewood is part of the ìGolden Triangle' that encompasses some of the richest alluvial gold areas of the world that, besides Inglewood, also includes the areas of Moliagul, Tarnagulla, Dunolly, Rheola and Kingower. It is the area where the 'Welcome Stranger,î the biggest gold nugget ever unearthed, was discovered.

The three other main mining areas, besides that of the Maxwells Inglewood Mine, located in the same area are; March Unity- Morning Star, Jersey and Columbian. It is these deposits that have been attributed with producing 90 percent of all recorded gold production in the area.
