The Lord Nelson Gold Mine, that is presently under care and maintenance,is located six kilometres from the town of Sandstone and 600 kilometres north east of Perth, in the East Murchison Mineral Field of Western Australia.

Gold Mining Began at Sandstone in 1894

Gold has been mined in the Sandstone area since 1894 when it was discovered 20 kilometres south of the present town of Sandstone. Another gold deposit was discovered in 1903 within a few hundred metres of the town. Between 1903 and 1916 there were 930,000 ounces of gold mined inthe Sandstone area. However, gold mining declined in the area with the outbreak of the First World War.

Herald Resources Re-started Gold Mining at Sandstone in 1990

Mining company, Herald Resources, resurrected the Sandstone gold mine in 1990 when it started milling operations at the site. Herald Resources sold the Sandstone Mine to Troy Resources, in 1999. By 2002, Troy Resources, was producing gold at its Bulchina Mine, within its Sandstone tenements which continued until 2005, during this time the mine produced 223,000 ounces of gold.

Lord Nelson Mine Discovered by Troy Resources in 2004

Troy Resources discovered the Lord Nelson and then the Lord Henry gold deposits at its Sandstone Gold Project, 30 kilometres south east of the Bulchina mine site, in 2004. Mining commenced at the Lord Nelson deposit early in 2005 and at the Lord Henry deposit the following year, 2006. Troy Resources ceased the open cut mining of these two deposits in 2010 and placed both in care and maintenance.

Black Oak Minerals Acquire Lord Nelson Mine With Sandstone Purchase in 2012

The Sandstone gold mining project was sold to Black Oak Minerals (Southern Cross Goldfields) in August, 2012. The sale included the Sandstone carbon-in-leach (CIL) gold plant that had been significantly upgraded in 2005 to allow it to process 600,000 tonnes of gold bearing ore a year. Black Oak Minerals planned to remove and relocate the Sandstonegold treatment plant to its Marda Project to facilitate an early start up of its Marda gold mining operations.

Lord Nelson Mine Still on Care and Maintenance

The Sandstone Gold Mine is not a large operation but was the lowest-cost gold producer in Australia during the early 2000's. Before Troy Resources sold its Sandstone mining operations to Black Oak Minerals it had plannedto close the Lord Nelson mine in February, 2009, until an increase in the gold price kept the mine operating for a further 12 months, as the higher price made processing the low grade Lord Nelson ore more profitable. The Lord Nelson Mine currently remains on care and maintenance.
