The mining town of Leinster, in the northern goldfields of Western Australia, four kilometres off the eastern side of the Goldfields Highway and 968 kilometres north east of Perth, was foundered by Agnew Mining in 1976, to service its nickel mining operations.
Leinster Named After the Leinster Downs Station
Leinster, that was named after the near by, Leinster Downs Station, in the Shire of Leonora, has a population of around 700 people. The town is now part of Nickel West, a subsidiary company of giant international mining company, BHP Billiton. In recent years Leinster has been home to the Perseverance underground nickel mine, that is now closed. Two mines, that are only four kilometres apart, the Cliffs underground mine and the Mount Keith underground mining operation, truck their ore by road train to the Leinster Processing Plant where it is processed.Leinster Provides Modern Accommodation for Permanent and FIFO Workers
The mining town of Leinster provides its residents with various sporting facilities that include an 18 hole golf course and an air conditioned indoor sports centre. It also provides a supermarket, post office, service station, primary school and tavern. The population of 700 residents is bolstered with an equal number of fly-in-fly-out workers.The fly-in-fly-out workforce are housed in 'state-of-the-art' accommodation at Mount Keith, four kilometres from the Leinster village. The workers accommodation and the town of Leinster provides the workers with a life style that is unique among mining camps in that it has its own race course, olympic sized swimming pool and health and fitness centre.
The Leinster airfield caters for two airlines; Alliance Airlines an Skippers Aviation, to transport fy-in-fly-out workers to and from their jobs at either Leinster mining operations or at the processing plant. The airfield is the main link between Leister and Perth.
