The mining town of Leinster, in the northern goldfields of Western Australia, four kilometres off the eastern side of the Goldfields Highway and 968 kilometres north east of Perth, was foundered by Agnew Mining in 1976, to service its nickel mining operations.

Leinster Named After the Leinster Downs Station

Leinster, that was named after the near by, Leinster Downs Station, in the Shire of Leonora, has a population of around 700 people. The town is now part of Nickel West, a subsidiary company of giant international mining company, BHP Billiton. Between 2002 and 2007 Leinster also serviced the Thunderbox gold mine located 41 kilometres to its south east.

Leinster Nickel West Comprises the Cliffs and Mt Keith Mines and Concentrator

In recent years Leinster has been home to the Perseverance underground nickel mine, that is now closed. Two mines, that are only four kilometres apart, the Cliffs underground mine and the Mount Keith underground mining operation, truck their ore by road train to the Leinster Processing Plant where it is processed.

Leinster Provides Modern Accommodation for Permanent and FIFO Workers

The mining town of Leinster provides its residents with various sporting facilities that include an 18 hole golf course and an air conditioned indoor sports centre. It also provides a supermarket, post office, service station, primary school and tavern. The population of 700 residents is bolstered with an equal number of fly-in-fly-out workers.

The fly-in-fly-out workforce are housed in 'state-of-the-art' accommodation at Mount Keith, four kilometres from the Leinster village. The workers accommodation and the town of Leinster provides the workers with a life style that is unique among mining camps in that it has its own race course, olympic sized swimming pool and health and fitness centre.

The Leinster airfield caters for two airlines; Alliance Airlines an Skippers Aviation, to transport fy-in-fly-out workers to and from their jobs at either Leinster mining operations or at the processing plant. The airfield is the main link between Leister and Perth.

Leinster Concentrator can Handle Three Million Tonnes Annually

The ore processing and concentration plant at Leinster is able to handle three million tonnes of ore a year. Once processed the copper and nickel ore concentrate is taken from Leinster, by rail, to the Nickel West smelter at Kalgoorlie located 375 kilometres south.

BHP Billiton Purchased Leinster Nickel West Operations in 2005

BHP Billiton has had operations in the Leinster area since 2005, when it acquired Nickel West from Western Mining Corporation Resources Limited (WMC). Nickel West at that time consisted of the Mt Keith underground mine along with its Leinster operations. At the time it was regarded as being the third largest nickel concentrate producer in the world. The company grew to employ 992 workers who produced between 40,000 and 45,000 tonnes of nickel concentrate annually. Large scale mining began at Leinster in 1897 when gold was discovered by the East Murchison United Company. Western Selcast and Mt Isa Mines sold the Leinster nickel mining and processing operation to WMC in 1988.
