The Grasstree underground coal mine is located near the town of Middlemount, 200 kilometres north west of Rockhampton, in central Queensland. The Grasstree mine is owned and operated by Capcoal which is, in turn, owned by Anglo American with 70 percent shareholding. The remaining 30 percent is held by Mitsu Coal Holdings Australia.

Coal From at the Grasstree Mine is Mined at a Depth of 250 Metres

Coal mined at the Grasstree mine is transported by a series of conveyor belt conveyors that take it a distance of six kilometres to reach the surface, 250 kilometres above the workings. The coal seam is accessed by two vertical shafts that have been constructed from the bottom of the Grasstree mine pit.

Grasstree Mine is Part of the German Creek Coal Formation

The Grasstree underground coal mine is part of the German Creek coal formation in Queensland's Bowen-Basin. It produces a low to medium volatile hard coking coal that Capcoal blend with coal from its other German Creek East mines before it is exported to customers in South America, Europe and Asia. Grasstree mine coal production averages around four million tonnes a year. This production coal is washed at Capcoal's German Creek CHPP (Coal Handling and Preparation Plant).

The German Creek group of mines owned by Capcoal are situated between the Southern and Central Collieries. The Grasstree mine, that began production in 2002, produced its first long wall coal product in 2006.

Grasstree is One of Two Capcoal Underground Coal Mines

Capcoal work two underground operations, the Grasstree and the Aquilla coal mines, along with two open cut operations, the Oak Park and the Lake Lindsay pits, all in the centre of Central Queensland's coal rich Bowen Basin. The Capcoal mines produce premium quality hard coking coal for export to steel makers around the world. The majority of Capcoal production comes from the German Creek coal formation that is renown for its exceptional high quality hard coking coal.

The German Creek coal sequence contains five seams known as the; German Creek, Pleiades, Aquila, Tieri and Corvus seams with the Capcoal lease covering a total of 27,343 hectares. The mines are all located 240 kilometres south west of Mackay and about 25 kilometres south west of Middlemount. It is also located near the regional centre of Emerald.

Grasstree Coal is Taken 360 Kilometres by Rail to the Coast for Export

Total Capcoal coal production averages around 11.8 million tonnes a year that produce over 8.5 million tonnes of PCI and prime quality hard coking coal. When processed at the Capcoal CHPP, the washed coal is taken by rail to the RG Tanna and the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminals, a distance of about 360 kilometres to the south from where it is exported.

Most Grasstree Mine Employees Reside in Middlemount

Most Grasstree underground mine employees live in the nearby town of Middlemount that has a population of about 3,000 residents. Middlemount provides mining families with their education and sporting facilities. The company's interaction with the Middlemount community is maintained through many informal as well as formal communication. A Cultural Heritage Management Plan has been established between Capcoal and the traditional owners of the land on which the lease is located, the Barada Barna Kabalbara and Yetimaria people.
