The Edna May-Westonia Mine, that is owned by Evolution Mining Limited, has a long history going back over 100 years. Underground mining actually began at Edna May as early as 1910. The operation was suspended in 1922 but resumed again in 1948. The open pit mine at Edna May began production in 1985 and the then owner, ACM, developed a decline at the site and began underground stoping on a small scale.
First Gold Poured at the Rejuvenated Edna May-Westonia Mine Occurred in April 2010
The current owner of the Edna May-Westonia gold mine poured the first gold produced by them from the mine in April 2010 and announced plans to have the operation producing between 75,000 and 80,000 ounces of gold a year by 2013. They are operating the Edna May-Westonia mine as an open pit mine at the present time but are looking towards developing an underground operation at the site in order to extend the life of the mine which is currently nine years.

Owner Operator Fleet a feature of the Edna May-Westonia Mine
Open pit mining at the Edna May-Westonia Mine is carried out via a conventional drilling, blasting. loading and haulage method. This bulk mining technique has been adopted to facilitate the mining of the high grade reef structures of the Edna May-Westonia deposits. It allows the company to use a single fleet of mining vehicles that are all owner operated. The open cut is being mined with 10 metre benches and 2.5 metre flitches over four stages.
Edna May-Westonia Mine Processes 2.6 Million Tonnes of Ore Annually
Evolution Mining Limited's gold treatment plant at the Edna May- Westonia Mine is capable of processing 2.6 million tonnes of gold bearing ore a year and this is in the process of being increased to 3 million tonnes. This increased throughput will better cater for the the extra ore that will come from the widening of the open pit by means of staged cutbacks as it will give long term access to the ore body. At the present time there are 180 people employed at the Edna May-Westonia gold mine as part of the company's workforce or as contractors.
The Edna May-Westonia gold processing plant was purchased from Harmony Gold after they closed the Big Bell gold mine near Cue in Western Australia in 2003. The entire plant was transported from the Big Bell mine site to Edna May-Westonia mine site where it was re-constructed in 2007. The plant consists of a 3.7MW ball mill and a 2.0MW SAG mill along with a conventional CIL (carbon-in-leach) process. The process obtains a gold recovery rate of around 92 percent.
