The Dongara Titanium Minerals Project is located in the Midwest Region of Western Australia, 25 kilometres south east of Dongara. The project is both owned and being developed by Tronox Management Pty Ltd. The Dongara Titanium Minerals Project is a mineral sand mining and concentrating operation. Tronox Management Pty Ltd is the Australian subsidiary of American based chemical company, Tronox, the third largest titanium dioxide pigment producer and marketer in the world.
Dongara Heavy Minerals Sand to be Processed at the Chandala Dry Mill
The heavy mineral concentrate produced at the Dongara Titanium Minerals Project will be taken to the Tronox Chandala Dry Mill for processing and separation into its various mineral components before marketing. Ilmenite will be processed into synthetic rutile and eventually titanium dioxide pigment at the company's Kwinana Pigment Plant.Dongara Titanium Minerals Project to Cover 1,400 Hectares of Land
The Dongara Titanium Minerals Project mining operation will disturb up to 1,400 hectares of land through clearing and groundwater dewatering, including some wetlands. The mine will involve developing six open pits that will give access to a heavy mineral sands reserve of 85 million tonnes of titanium bearing ore. The ore bodies are expected to produce four million tonnes of heavy mineral concentrate over the life of mine that is expected to be between seven and 15 years. Infrastructure will include administration buildings, a maintenance workshop, waste water treatment plant, fuel storage area, water supply bores, a power supply, haulage roads, tailings facility and overburden dumps.Dongara Sand Mining to use Both Dry Mining and Wet Dredging Mining Techniques
The Dongara Titanium Minerals Project will be developed using a combination of dry mining methods as well as wet dredging. The ore bodies will be accessed following the dewatering of the superficial aquifer and the water required for processing is to be acquired from the Yarragadee aquifer. Ore recovered from the mine site will be initially separated onsite with the resulting heavy mineral concentrate taken from the site to the Chandala Processing Plant by truck.Dongara Tailings to be Used as Void Backfill
Clay and non-mineral sand that is separated from the heavy mineral sand concentrate, known as tailings, will be returned to the mined out voids and used as part of the mine rehabilitation process. The tailings will be free of all chemicals and only inert sand and clay will be used in this manner. To ensure this is the case the waste sludge will be flocculated with biodegradable synthetic flocculants. The tailings will then be further exposed to a solar drying process before being covered with overburden, subsoil and topsoil, in readiness for replanting of native vegetation. The Dongara Titanium Minerals Project was originally proposed by Triwest Pty Ltd which was an equal share joint venture company involving Tronox Western Australia Pty Ltd and a subsidiary of Exxaro Australia Sands Pty Ltd. Tronox eventually acquired all of Exxaro's shares and in 2012 changed the name of the ownership of the project to that of Tronox Management Pty Ltd.
