The Bylong Coal Project, that is located 53 kilometres from Denman and 55 kilometres north east of Mudgee in mid-west New South Wales, is progressing well, with owner KEPCO Bylong Australia, lodging a Development Application with the New South Wales Government Department of Planning and Environment in July, 2015, for the project to proceed further. The Development Application is a required formality indicating the finalisation of the project's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that has taken four years to complete.

KEPCO Lodge Development Application for Bylong Coal Project

The lodging of the Bylong Coal Project Development Application is part of the New South Wales government's planning approval process. The next step will be the public exhibition of the EIS. KEPCO will advise the public on where the EIS is to be displayed while at the same time inviting public comment on it, before formally applying for a mining lease.

Bylong Coal Project to Provide Jobs for 800 Construction Workers

The Bylong Coal Project is expected to provide jobs for up to 800 construction workers and around 275 people on a permanent basis when it becomes operational. The coal mine at Bylong, that will be capable of producing for about 25 years, will begin as an open cut operation, that will last for about nine years, before being developed as an underground mine. The mine will be capable of supplying up to 6.5 million tonnes of thermal coal a year from an area of about 3,000 hectares that will contain two open cut operations and an underground mine.

Construction of the Bylong Coal Project is on track to commence in 2017 and will continue for at least two years before production comes on line 2019. The coal will then be railed from the mine site to the Newcastle port from where it will be exported. A railway loop line will be built to connect with the existing Sandy Hollow-Gulgong railway line.

Cockatoo Coal Limited Managed Feasibility Investigation for Bylong Coal Mine

KEPCO have been working on the Bylong Coal Project since 2010, having undertaken exploration activity with Cockatoo Coal Limited which managed all feasibility and exploration investigations for the proposed mine.

KEPCO Bylong Australia is a fully owned subsidiary of South Korean electricity producing company, KEPCO. KEPCO ( Korea Electric Power Corporation) is South Korea's largest producer of electricity using nuclear power, and wind, as well as coal, to produce up to 98 percent of the country's electricity requirements. The company is 51 percent owned by the South Korean government.

WorsleyParsons to Guide Bylong Coal Project Through its Development Stage

Global mining company, WorleyParsons, has been appointed by KEPCO to manage the development stage of the Bylong Coal Project on its behalf. It will also manage the construction of the mine once all the approvals have been granted for the project to proceed.

KEPCO acquired the Bylong Coal Project from Anglo American in 2010. The company wholly owns the project, which is to mine an indicated and inferred resource of 420 million metric tonnes of low ash thermal coal for power generation in Asia.
