Australian Bauxite Limited's bauxite mine, the Bald Hill mine, fourkilometres from Cambell Town, in the north of the state, is the first bauxite mine to start production in Australia for over 35 years. The Bald Hill mine is located about 100 kilometres from the Bell Bay port. Australian Bauxite is also planning to start production at two other sites in Tasmania shortly, one at DL130 and the other at Fingal Rail. Workers for the Bald Hill operation are being sourced locally.

Three Contracts Awarded for Bald Hill Mine to Proceed

Australian Bauxite has now had the Bald Hill mining lease officiallygranted by the Tasmanian State Government, it has also finalised a fundingand marketing agreement for its product with Noble Group and it hasawarded three contracts to facilitate the mining operation at Bald Hill:

1. The contract for the mining and processing of Bald Hill bauxite hasbeen awarded to Stornoway Group

2. The contract to take the bauxite from the mine to the port at BellBay, north of Launceston, has been given to TasRail

3. Port services at Bell Bay will be handled by Qube Ports

Stornoway began business in 1976 as a small Tasmanian stone quarry

Today, the company develops, manages and maintains, water infrastructure and roads throughout Australia. It also supplies a wide range of quarry products from various sites across Tasmania. Stornoway now operates as an Australian national business, with projects undertaken in all states, as well as in South East Asia.

TasRail is a Tasmanian state owned enterprise that dates back to thelate 1800's. The rail network consists of a single narrow gauge railway line transportation system that totals 632 kilometres of operational railway and 211 kilometres of non-operational railway line.

Qube Ports is the foremost port solution provider in Australia. Itprovides services in 28 ports in all states of the country, including Bell Bay in Northern Tasmania.

Bald Hill Mine to Produce 0.44 Million Tonnes Annually as DSO

Australian Bauxite will initially be exporting 0.44 million tonnes ofbauxite a year, as Direct Shipping Ore (DSO), from the Bald Hilloperation. This quantity of bauxite will be increased to two million tonnes annually by 2017/18, when the companies other two Tasmanian projects, Fingal Rail and DL-130 come on line. Over 1.6 million tonnes of bauxite will be mined from Australian Bauxite Limited's Tasmanian operations. The bauxite will be sold on both the Australian domestic market as well as international markets. The Bald Hill open pit mine will create about 45 jobs.

Bald Hill Bauxite of Good Quality

One of the main reasons Australian Bauxite Limited chose their firstmining project to take place in Tasmania was that the approvals process isstraight forward and simple to negotiate. The mining lease was only appliedfor in May, 2014, with it being granted just four months later, in September. Bald Hill bauxite is also regarded as being of good quality, anideal product for special purpose blending in refineries, for theenhancement of final alumina quality.
