The Atlas-Campaspe heavy mineral sands project is located 270 kilometres east of Broken Hill and 90 kilometres north of Balranald in the Murray Basin Region of New South Wales. The project is being proposed by Cristal Mining Australia Limited, a subsidiary of Cristal Australia Pty Ltd which is wholly owned by National Titanium Dioxide Company Limited(Cristal), a private heavy mineral mining company based in Kuwait.

Atlas-Campaspe Project Involves two Components

The Atlas-Campaspe project consists of two major components; the first involves the construction and development of project infrastructure at the project site and the second being the construction and operation of the railway facility at Ivanhoe.

Atlas-Campaspe Sand Mine to Have a Life of Mine of 20 Years

The Atlas-Campaspe mine would be developed with the use of conventional open pit mining methods and will not require dredge mining techniques. The operation will have a life of mine of around 20 years. The project has received environmental approval from both the New South Wales and the Australian Federal Governments in 2014.

Atlas-Campaspe Heavy Minerals to be Separated at Broken Hill Plant

The Atlas-Campaspe heavy minerals deposit hosts more than 6.5 million tonnes of ore that will be concentrated into rutile, zircon, leucoxene and ilmenite products. The proposed Ivanhoe Rail Load Out Facility is situated about 135 kilometres north east of the Atlas-Campaspe project site and 4.5 kilometres south west of Ivanhoe. The heavy mineral concentrate produced at the project site is to be taken to the rail load out facility at Ivanhoe by truck where it will be loaded onto railway wagons to be taken to the company's mineral separation plant at Broken Hill. When the concentrate arrives at the Broken Hill separation plant it will be further processed to separate the various minerals from its composition. There will be around 109 million tonnes of heavy mineral sand mined at the Atlas-Campaspe mine over the life of the project.

Waste Tailings to be Returned to Atlas-Campaspe Site for Rehabilitation Use

The waste tailings produced during processing at the Broken Hill separation plant will be placed in sealed storage containers and returned to the Atlas-Campaspe project site via the Broken Hill-Orange Railway, to be unloaded, stockpiled and eventually used as placement in the mined out areas as part of the site rehabilitation process.

Atlas-Campaspe Project to Take 12 Months to Construct

It is expected that construction of the Atlas-Campaspe mine site will take around 12 months to complete. This work will involve onsite and mine access roads, a sewage treatment plant and an accommodation camp, power supply infrastructure that includes diesel generators, a power distribution station and transmission lines, a water supply sourced from a borefield as well as localised dewatering systems, pipes etc, administration offices, maintenance workshop, store, car parking area, etc. Construction will also involve the assembly of a dry mining unit, a primary gravity concentration unit that is part of the mineral sands processing infrastructure, a salt washing facility and a wet magnetic separation circuit of high intensity. Mineral sand handling infrastructure will also be built, this includes pipelines, pumps, waste processing, towers, stackers etc.
