All necessary state and federal governmental approvals have been granted to have the proposed underground AGL Gas Pipeline built linking Stratford, near Gloucester, with the new Newcastle gas storage facility currently being constructed near Tomago in New South Wales.
Construction to Start on AGL Gas Pipeline in Early 2015
The approvals clear the way for the project to proceed as planned as AGL
have already arranged access and compensation agreements with 146 property owners along the way. Only a small number of properties along the route have yet to come to an agreement with AGL to allow the pipeline to cross their land. It is expected construction of the pipeline will start in early 2015.
AGL Gas Pipeline to Take Coal Seam Gas to LNG Storage Facility at Newcastle
The underground AGL Gas Pipeline will take coal seam gas from the Gloucester Gas Project, near Stratford and the existing Sydney to Newcastle gas pipeline by way of the new AGL gas storage facility currently under construction at Tomago.
AGL Gas Pipeline to Take gas From the Gloucester Gas Project to Tomago
The Gloucester Gas Project, that is located 100 kilometres north of Newcastle, is wholly owned and operated by AGL, it includes the following:
A gas delivery station at Hexham that connects the gas being transported to the existing Sydney to Newcastle pipeline
A gas pipeline between the gas supply network at Hexham and the central gas processing facility
A 15 megawatt gas fuelled electricity generating plant
A central gas processing facility that separates gas and water
Stage one of the gas field development that includes up to 110 gas wells and necessary infrastructure
AGL Gas Pipeline to be Built Over 95 Kilometres
The 95 kilometre AGL Gas Pipeline linking the Gloucester project with the Newcastle gas storage facility will be an important part of AGL's overall New South Wales gas network. The pipeline is expected to transport over 15 percent of New South Wales gas requirements by 2018 giving the state a reliable, steady source of gas into the future.
The AGL Gas Pipeline will be buried throughout its course and once constructed all disturbed land will be completely rehabilitated. This will allow for shallow cropping and grazing to continue as it had done previously. The pipeline easement only uses a small portion of land on rural properties and landowners are financially compensated for this useage.
Tomago Industrial Area at Newcastle Will Store gas From the AGL Gas Pipeline
The Tomago industrial area where the Newcastle gas storage facility is being built is close to the large Newcastle demand centre such as the Tomago aluminium smelter. There is also has a significant buffer zone surrounding the project.
The Newcastle gas storage facility is an above ground insulated tank that is kept at a certain atmosphere pressure. The coal seam gas is cooled to around minus 162 degrees Celsius and stored as liquefied natural gas (LNG). When it is required for use it is warmed and converted back to a gas form.
