The Ophthalmia iron ore project, that is located between 15 and 30 kilometres north of the mining centre of Newman, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, is wholly owned by Brockman Mining Australia Pty Ltd , a Chinese based company that is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and the Hong Kong Exchange.
The Ophthalmia iron ore deposit, that exists of bedded hematite mineralisation, was first mapped and surface sampled by field reconnaissance, following its discovery, in August, 2011. Since that time drilling programs have been carried out resulting in the discovery of the Sirius, Kalgan Creek and Coondiner (Castor and Pallas) deposits, that give the Ophthalmia project a total JORC compliant Mineral Resource of 341 million tonnes grading at 59.3 percent iron, of which 280 million tonnes is classified as being Indicated Resources.
The positive exploration results are of particular significance in support for the planned development of the Atlas, Aurizon and Brockman proposed independent East Pilbara Railway, as the Ophthalmia project is situated just 80 kilometres south east of the Brockman owned, Marillana iron ore mine. The Ophthalmia discovery gives Brockman Mining the option of putting increased tonnage on the proposed railway, therefore making it more viable, as well as that of the loading and exporting facilities at Port Hedland.
A Pre-Feasibility Study of the Ophthalmia project has been instigated by Brockman Mining for the creation of as 15 million tonnes a year direct shipping ore (DSO) open cut mining operation to be constructed at the Ophthalmia site. The study assumed that Brockman had solved the rail infrastructure problems associated with its Marillana project, although the company is also planning to evaluate the worth of operating a smaller, temporary, road haulage transportation system, based on the availability of mining high grade, above the water table mineralisation of the Sirus iron ore deposit.
The Brockman owned mining tenements that include the Marillana flagship project and the smaller Ophthalmia project, are all located about 270 kilometres from Western Australia's largest export port at Port Hedland. The Ophthalmia project gives the company an option of connecting the Ophthalmia development to the existing Marillana infrastructure as a means of lowering start up costs.
