Xstrata Coal

Xstrata Coal's Head Office is based in Sydney NSW but they operate globally. Employing more than 17,000 people including contractors with the majority working in Australia. Xstrata has been included on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since 2006.

Operations include both underground and open cut mines producing thermal, coking and semi soft coal products. Xstrata manages over 100 million tonnes of coal per year, most of which is exported. Thermal coal is used to generate electricity where coking coal (or metallurgical coal) is used in the production of steel.

Current projects and operations include- West Wallsend, Mt Owen, Ravensworth, Mangoola, Bulga and Liddell all in NSW and in Qld they have Collinsville, Newlands, Oaky Creek, Rolleston and Wandoan. Xstrata also have operations in Canada, Columbia, and South Africa.

Xstrata practices environmental and ethical performances and works respectfully with local communities.

With mining obviously having some impact on the environment, Xstrata aims to minimise this by rehabilitating areas they disturb during operations and preserve or restore environments around their mines.

Some ways they manage this accountability is by-

restoring mine areas to conditions as much as possible before the mining started

use of renewable energy

water efficiency

waste management to avoid contaminating the land

researching ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions

are a major contributor to the Coal 21 voluntary industry fund for development of Australian clean coal technologies
