Wesfarmers Resources deal in open cut metallurgical coal, with two mines, the Curragh mine in Qld and the Bengalla mine in the Hunter Valley, NSW. Both mines use the coal for domestic and export purposes.
The Curragh mine is located 200 kilometres west of Rockhampton in the Bowen Basin Qld.It produces around 8.5 million tonnes of metallurgical coal and around 3 million tonnes of steaming coal annually. The exported coal is shipped to customers in Japan, South East Asia, Europe and South America.
Curraghs steaming coal is produced and used for domestic power generation, its transported to the Stawell Power Station near Rockhampton. The 20 kilometre long conveyor which transports the coal from Curragh North to Curragh is the longest single flight conveyor in the world.
The Bengalla open cut coal mine is a joint venture, Wesfarmers has a 40% interest and produces around 7 million tonnes annually of steaming coal for both export and domestic use.
