Energy Resources Australia

Energy Resources Australia (ERA) is a subsidiary of Rio Tinto and was established in 1980 and at the time it was the largest public float in Australian history.

Using open cut mining methods, ERA mine uranium ore from two deposits, producing uranium oxide at Ranger mine processing facilities in the Northern Territory. The first drum of uranium oxide was produced on 13 August 1981.In 1996 the Northern Territory government approved mining from pit 3, with open cut mining starting in July 1997, specialising in uranium and uranium oxide.

Ranger mine produces in excess of 100,000 tonnes of uranium oxide, which is used to generate electricity using nuclear energy, which produces minimal carbon emissions. Asia, Europe and North America benefit from Australia's export of uranium for their power needs. ERA supply the power utilities under strict international and Australian Government safeguards and non-proliferation conditions to ensure that Australian uranium is used for peaceful purposes only.

Mining completed in Pit 3 at Ranger in 2012, Energy Resources of Australia has since begun the transition from open cut mining to underground exploration of the Ranger 3 Deeps mineral.

ERA also holds the title to Jabiluka, a deposit 22 kilometres north of Ranger. This deposit is under long term care and maintenance and will not be developed by ERA without consent from the Mirarr Traditional Owners.
