BHP Billiton have been in the industry for over 150 years & are among the largest producers of major commodities such as aluminium, copper, coal, iron ore, silver & branching out into oil & gas.
They have over 100 locations throughout the world & employ more than 100,000 employees & contractors.
BHP's history of Broken Hill Proprietary, started out in a silver, lead & zinc mine in the town of Broken Hill in 1885. Billiton started in 1960, a tin mine on Billiton (Beltung) Island in Indonesia. Both companies grew over the years expanding into other commodities, with Billiton being a major producer of aluminium,& ilumina, chrome & other minerals & BHP lead the way in discovery, development, production & marketing natural resources such as iron ore, copper, diamonds & zinc.
So when the two companies merged as one in 2001 they became one of the largest resources companies in the world. With a new logo introduced & the company listed on the AXS & LSE, they started operations all over the world.

In 2002 BHP Billiton commenced the Bream Pipeline in Bass Strait.
In 2005 they announced first production from the Minerva gas field in the Offshore Otway Basin in Victoria.
In 2009 BHP Billiton opened the Newman Mining Hub in W.A at its Iron Ore Operations and they celebrated the 40th anniversary of the railing & shipping of the first iron ore mined from its Mt Newman Project.

- Western Australian Iron Ore Port Hedland Inner Harbour expansion, possible development of the Outer Harbour.
- Mining Hubs located in the Pilbara, encompassing MAC, Newman & Yandi.
- Caval Ridge Project, Bowen Basin Qld. Joint venture with Mitsubishi Development and Managed by BMA. Coal mineThe New Global Head Office at 171 Collins St, Melbourne Was officially opened on the 18th of November 2013 which coincided with the 130th anniversary of the discovery of lead, zinc and silver at Broken Hill in 1883 that led to the creation of BHP.
