Protest against New Year's Eve leave restrictions from Wheatstone construction workers

Thursday 15th of December 2016 09:59:35 AM

In Western Australia on one of Australia’s largest resources projects in the Pilbara region, construction workers have protested a decision to not allow them to spend New Year’s Eve off site in Onslow.

Last year in the Onslow community, concerns were raised around drinking and disorderly behaviour when FIFO workers had unrestricted access into the coastal town, which normally has a population of around 800 people.

Since then, access into town from the construction site, which houses around 7,000 FIFO workers, has been tightly restricted by Chevron's lead contractor Bechtel.

Two FIFO construction workers who spoke to the ABC said dozens of applications requesting permission to spend New Year's Eve in Onslow had been knocked back.

One of the workers, who wished to be known as Brian, said the workers had booked accommodation and transport before requesting permission to leave site, as per the protocol from their employer.
