Possible Payouts for Black Lung victims

Tuesday 11th of July 2017 06:38:14 AM

Mine workers diagnosed with black lung could receive lump-sum payments.

As part of proposed legislation being examined by the Queensland parliament's Finance and Administration committee, anyone diagnosed with coal workers' pneumoconiosis could be eligible for payouts ranging between $18,000 and $120,000.

Office of Industrial Relations assistant senior director, Janene Hillhouse said in a committee hearing held yesterday, the payment scheme was determined by examining the severity of the disease.

"Only a worker with the most significant form of pneumoconiosis - progressive massive fibrosis - would potentially receive that sum (of $120,000)," she said.

The costs of testing workers is estimated to be around $2500 each.

If the bill is passed, miners will also win the right to reopen work cover cases if their condition has deteriorated.
