Perth Shipbuilder lands $780M Contract

Perth-based shipbuilder Austal has secured a $780 million contract by the US Navy, to supply an additional Littoral Combat Ship.

It's the 14th combat ship Austal has already been contracted to build, with five vessels already completed, the sixth is soon to be handed over.

Austal chief executive David Singleton told The Australian Financial Review, that the company continues to show that Australian shipbuilding can be world class and that even in the toughest market, continue to win orders.

Austal builds its aluminium ships for the US Navy at its yard in Mobile, Alabama, where 4000 people are employed but some components are made here in Australia at Henderson in Perth.

Austal has partnered with German designer Fassmer and is bidding for a $3 billion tender to build 12 OPVs. A decision is expected shortly, with construction expected to commence next year in Adelaide for the first two boats before shifting to Perth in 2020.
