Mining Dialogue builds bridges with the Upper Hunter community

Friday 6th of January 2017 09:38:15 AM

The participants of the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue are confident their co-operative approach has created dividends.

The dialogue includes the following mining companies Ashton, BHP Billiton, Bloomfield Collieries, Coal & Allied, Muswellbrook Coal, Peabody Energy and Glencore together with community representatives, government bodies, business leaders, green groups and residents. The dialogue is funded by the NSW Minerals Council with the goal of addressing community concerns on the impact of mining in Upper Hunter communities.

The dialogue members created an initial 80 ideas down to a set of 10 projects in four areas: water, social impacts and infrastructure, land management and emissions and health.

Glencore’s Dave O’Brien says it’s been a matter of building trust with the community.

He said a “first of its kind” water accounting project, released in December, built an overall picture of the Hunter River from Glenbawn Dam to Singleton. Perhaps surprisingly, the data showed coalmines used just 3% of water in the upper Hunter River system, compared with 49% used by power stations, farms and town water.
