Koolyanobbing iron ore project expansion

Wednesday 4th of January 2017 11:46:25 AM

An expansion of Cliffs Natural Resources’ Koolyanobbing iron ore project has been allowed by the Environment Protection Authority after rejecting appeals from environmental groups.

The complex has been operated by the US-headquartered miner since taking over Portman in 2008. By bringing three open pits into production at the Range F deposit, it expects to add nine million tonnes of ore a year for three years.

EPA appeals convenor Emma Gaunt dismissed an appeal from the Wilderness Society of WA that argued the expansion would irreversibly damage a rare plant species, Tetratheca erubescens.

The Wilderness Society estimates the range holds almost a quarter of the species’ world total and Cliffs should be bound to deposit up to $2 million to rehabilitate the disturbed flora.

Ms Gaunt said the EPA was convinced that Cliffs had made adequate provisions in its submission.
