Inpex gas plant in Darwin cuts 460 jobs

Wednesday 26th of October 2016 10:24:53 AM

Construction contractor JKC has confirmed about 460 workers at Darwin’s Inpex gas plant have lost their jobs, but the Northern Territory Electrical Trades Union (ETC) has put that figure at 480.

The union have said about 380 electricians, boiler-makers and other tradespeople employed by subcontractor UGL had lost their jobs at the Inpex power station, as well as another 100 staff.

In a statement, JKC confirmed work would stop for about 460 personnel at the Ichthys Project Onshore LNG Facilities' combined cycle power plant, by the end of October.

"The subcontractor has consulted with its employees and their unions about the upcoming demobilisations and where possible every effort will be made to redeploy personnel to other parts of the project," JKC Australia project director John Bramley said.

"With the project now in peak construction, more than 8,000 workers are on site each day." Electrical Trades Union organiser David Hayes said the news came as a shock to workers because the plant was still in the construction phase.
