Earthquake Rocks Iron Ore Mine

Thursday 15th of January 2015 09:11:22 AM

In a remote mine in Tasmania’s northwest, a small earthquake has rocked an iron ore site.

The magnitude 3.7 tremor struck near Savage River mine at 10.37am on the 14th of January.

The Grange Resources open cut iron ore mine felt the tremors, however it didn’t cause an damage or injury to the mine employees in the mine or at the nearby ore mill.

Mine controller Eric Neilson said he thought initially the jolt was a mining explosive, or "shot", accidentally discharging with miners inside the pit.

"I was a bit scared. I thought that there had been a shot down in the pit. It's lucky it wasn't a shot," he told AAP.

For several hours mining activity was suspended for a staff roll call and safety checks on the plant equipment and open cut mine.
