Conservation Council environment fears over mine approval

Monday 9th of November 2015 07:20:01 AM

The Nature Conservation Council says the recommendation to approve the Mount Thorley Warkworth mine is endangering the environment.

The Planning Assessment Commission deemed the project approvable two weeks ago, despite fierce opposition by environmentalists and Bulga residents.

The mine, located near Singleton in New South Wales, owned by Rio Tinto, has been in operation since the early 80's and supplies the domestic and international market with thermal and semi soft coking coal.

The Council's Daisy Barham said the decision will result in the destruction of hundreds of hectares of native bushland and will impact native wildlife.

"This is a shocking but I suppose not surprising outcome," she said.

"The Baird Government has again shown it is hand in glove with the coal industry and is continuing to put the wishes of coal companies and local communities ahead of our precious environment."

John Krey, a Bulga resident, said the decision undermines two previous court decisions.

"When you are supported by two courts that say you are right we have got to fight the wrongs that have been done to the people of Bulga and other communities around the place.” he said.

"It is not acceptable for the Government just to run roughshod over the top of court judgements to the detriment of the village of Bulga and others."
