About: The Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET) is in the final stage of construction at Golding Point, Gladstone, in central Queensland, to the west of the existing Barney Point and RG Tanna Terminals.

WICET is Expected to be Exporting Coal in the First Quarter 2015

WICET, that is expected to begin commercial exporting of coal from the terminal in the first quarter of 2015, will be operated by GPC (Gladstone Ports Corporation) on behalf of the owners of the project that includes; Aquila Resources, Caledon Coal, Cockatoo Coal, Glencore, New Hope Group, Westfarmers Curragh, Yancoal and International Coal that became a partner in the project following the collapse of founding shareholder, Bandanna Energy.

WICET to be Able to Export 80 Million Tonnes of Coal Annually

The WICET project is currently winding down its workforce from a previous 900 personnel to 250, as it nears completion. When completed the terminal will be capable of exporting 80 million tonnes of coal a year, effectively doubling the present capacity of the Gladstone Ports Corporation. The initial coal throughput at the new terminal will be around 27 million tonnes a year, a capacity that will grow ar required. This growth will be able reach 120 million tonnes annually when the site is fully developed.

Most Civil Works at the WICET Project Have Been Completed

Most of the civil work connected with the WICET project have now been completed although some minor work remains such as around the stockyard. Port servicing facilities that are needed to support the operation of the terminal are currently under construction. A shiploader from Malaysia has been installed at the site and work on the jetty and wharf are well advanced. Onshore work such as mechanical and electrical is still being progressed and the building of reclaim conveyors and surge bin, stacking system, overland conveyor and rail receiving facility are all well advanced. A commissioning program is presently underway to have the first ship loaded at the new port in early 2015.

Contractors Involved in the Construction of WICET

Monadelphous and Muhibbah Marine have formed a joint venture to carry out marine work at the WICET site that includes the 1.8 kilometer jetty, the wharf, ship access platforms, the transfer tower and platform, the take up tower, berthing and mooring dolphins, and the conveyors and drive. The Abigroup Golding joint venture were contracted to complete the bulk earthwork at the site, along with Civil Mining and Construction. Worley Parsons is responsible for the project's procurement and construction needs and Hatch, a part of AureconHatch, is the WICET engineering and management contractor.

John Holland was awarded a contract in 2012 to construct stage one of the stockyard works. This contract included the supply and building of the structural, instrumentation, electrical, piping and mechanical work at the WICET project site, as well as the installation of 13 sub-stations and the projects; piping reticulation, communication, control and main electrical work.
