About: Industrial explosive producer, Yara Pilbara Nitrates Pty Ltd, (YPNPL), is in the process of undertaking the TAN Burrup Project, located 13 kilometres north west of Karratha, on the Burrup Peninsula, in Western Australia. TAN (Technical Grade Ammonium Nitrate) is the prominent raw material used for the creation of ANFO (Porous Ammonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil), the most used civil explosive that is readily available in Australia. TAN is commonly used by Australian mining companies. TAN created at the Karratha facility will be sold to the Australian mining industry for use in mining activities.

TAN Burrup Project Contract Awarded to Downer EDI

In March 2014 it was announced that international, Spanish based, engineering contractor, Tecnicas Reunidas S.A., had awarded the contract for infrastructure installation at the TAN Burrup Project to Downer EDI. The contract awarded to Downer EDI involves installation of all the mechanical, structural, electrical, piping and instrumentation requirements at the project site. Downer EDI commenced work on the project immediately and it is expected the construction of the plant will be completed by early 2015. Tecnicas Reunidas S.A. is an engineering, design and construction company that operates throughout the world in the construction of many types of industrial facilities.

Primary Construction Contractor for the TAN Burrup Project is Tecnicas Reunidas YPNPL awarded the contract to construct the TAN Burrup Project to Tecnicas Reunidas in 2012. The contract involved the designing and building of a unit able to handle 760 metric tonnes per day of nitric acid, another unit able to handle 965 metric tonnes per day of wet ammonium nitrate, as well as a dry ammonium nitrate TAN prilling plant with the capacity of handling 915 metric tonnes per day.

The TAN Burrup Project overall will require the construction of processing plants, storage area for the finished product, a utilities area, several buildings such as a workshop, control room, staff amenities, laboratory, administration office and a safety and security gatehouse. The facility is located adjacent to an existing ammonia plant on the same industrial estate.

The storage requirements used in the production of TAN at the TAN Burrup Project include a bagged and a bulk storage facility. The bulk material produced at the facility will be taken to customers by truck after being loaded with the use of front end loaders that are fed by bucket elevators from storage silos along with a load weighing unit. The product to be bagged will be taken from a bulk storage silo that works as an intermediary between the production stage and bagging phase. Forklifts are then used to take the bagged product to a bagged storage facility to await transportation by truck transport to various customers.

The product to be produced at the TAN Burrup Plant will contain 34.5 percent nitrogen which is a technical grade ammonium nitrate that is sometimes referred to as a low density, or porous grade ammonium nitrate. It is made porous so it has an improved ability to better absorb fuel to give it a higher reactivity. This is opposed to fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate that is regarded as being non-porous.

YPNPL was formerly known as Burrup Nitrates Pty Ltd (BNPL). It comprises Yara, 45 percent, Orica, 45 percent and Apache, 10 percent. The TAN Burrup Project is due to be completed early in 2015 and is expected to employ 60 full time employees when fully operational.
