About:

The giant Tallering Peak open cut iron ore mine in the Mid West region of Western Australia started life in early 2004 with an annual production target of three million tonnes. This figure was achieved in the first quarter of the 2005/06 financial year.

Iron Ore Processed on Site at Tallering Peak Mine

Iron ore from the Tallering Peak Mine is both crushed and screened at the mine site before being transported by haulage trucks to Mullewa, 65 kilometres away, where its loaded into train wagons by means of a specially constructed loading facility for transportation 175 kilometres to the Geraldton port. At the port the ore is unloaded from the railway wagons and stored at the wharf in purposely built storage facilities to await loading onto Panamax sized bulk carriers that ship it to the company's Chinese customers.

Tallering Peak Closure Date set for mid 2013

The Tallering Peak Mine is due to close in mid 2013 after a life of about 11 years. This life of mine could still be extended however, if ongoing exploration talking place in and around the mine identifies additional ore bodies that are able to extend the life of the mine to beyond the scheduled mine closure date.

Mine Owner Mount Gibson Iron Limited

The owner of the Tallering Peak Mine, Mount Gibson Iron Limited, is a leading independent Australian iron ore miner. The company was formed in 1996, in Perth and became listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2002.

Family Oriented Workers Village

A feature of the Tallering Peak mine workers village, where the fly in fly out workers live when working their rostered days on, is the company's family 'Donga.' This is a family accommodation unit where a workers family can stay when visiting the workplace. It is meant to be a place where the whole family can be together for birthdays etc., replacing the family days that used to be arranged but became too unwieldy as the numbers in the workforce at the mine grew. All meals are supplied by the company when a worker and his or her family is staying in the company donga for one or two days at a time. At the present time there are 272 employees and contractors employed at the Tallering Peak iron ore mine.

Fitness Takes on an Important Role

Mount Gibson Iron Limited also has a fitness contractor employed on-site who runs wellness and health programs for the personnel working at the mine. Both one on one and health and fitness classes are offered to assist in keeping workers fit and healthy. This contractor also holds nutrition classes, hydration awareness in northern Australian heat, alcohol and drug awareness, injury avoidance, heart care, mental health and men's health matters. The company goes all out in helping workers adapt to the FIFO way of living and workers are encouraged to take part in activities at the nearby town of Mullewa that offers a swimming pool, dart competitions, pool competitions, Foxtel main events, quiz nights tennis, squash and bowls etc. Many of these events are organised through the miners social club.

Assistance Given to Local Aboriginal Groups

Mount Gibson Iron Limited is also involved with the local indigenous community and consults widely with them on all aspects of mine development. It has also arranged funds to assist the community with the following aids:

• The education and training of local aboriginals
• A liaison and monitoring committee to supervise aboriginal employment and any other obligation that arises from time to time
• The respect and advancement of Aboriginal culture and law.
