About: The coal seam gas field of Spring Gully is the southern part of the larger Comet Ridge gas field located 80 kilometres north of the central Queensland town of Roma.

Spring Gully Coal Seam gas Exploration Began in 1998

Coal seam gas exploration was started at Spring Gully in 1998 by Origin Energy with the company beginning commercial production of gas in 2005. Commercial gas production was quickly ramped up and by March 2008 it had reached 34 petajoules a day, or 93 terajoules daily. As additional production wells came on line, new gas compression and treatment plants were installed which resulted in production of coal seam gas from Spring Gully reaching 54 petajoules a year, or 150 terajoules a day, by June 2009. By February 2011, a total of 155 wells at Spring Gully were producing up to 150 terajoules daily.

Spring Gully Coal Seam Thickness up to Nine Metres

The coal deposits from which the Spring Gully coal seam gas is derived are those belonging to the Bandanna formation. The same formation that is producing coal seam gas at the Fairview coal seam gas field to the immediate north of Spring Gully. Coal thickness at Spring Gully is between nine and five metres with some coal seams containing good permeabilities as well as gas content.

Spring Gully Field Linked to an 87 Kilometre gas Pipeline

The Spring Gully coal seam gas operation also involves an 87 kilometre gas pipeline to the town of Wallumbilla, from here it connects with the Wallumbilla to Ballera and the Roma to Brisbane pipelines. A further 136 wells are being drilled at the Spring Gully coal seam gas field between 2011 and 2015, along with additional processing facilities to meet the anticipated growing domestic gas demand. This includes the 1000 megawatt Spring Gully power station.

Spring Gully Coal Seam gas Field Linked to Giant Australia Pacific LNG Project

Origin Energy is currently involved in developing the largest coal seam gas(CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Australia. This project, Australia Pacific LNG, that involves the Spring Gully coal seam gas field, is being undertaken as a joint venture between Origin Energy, Australia's largest integrated energy company, ConcoPhillips, an international energy company operating in 40 countries around the world and Sinopec, one of the largest petroleum, crude oil and natural gas suppliers in China.

Australia Pacific LNG holds the largest coal seam gas reserves in Australia. It is also the foremost coal seam gas producer in the country. Origin Energy is Australia's leading energy company that has operations across the energy supply chain, ranging from gas exploration and production to energy retailing and power generation. It has a workforce of 5,800 employees.

New Spring Gully Compression Facility Contract Awarded to Monadelphous

In November 2014, leading Australian construction company, Monadelphous Group Limited, were awarded a contract to build the new Spring Gully coal seam gas pipeline Compression Facility at Roma.
