About: The Sinivit gold mine is owned and operated by New Guinea Gold Limited, a subsidiary company of New Guinea Gold Corporation. New Guinea Gold Limited has recently been a respondent to court action brought against it by the Uramot Company Limited and the East New Britain Provincial Government regarding having its Sinivit mining lease extended in May 2012. The court has ordered the relevant authorities to reconsider and determine the lease extension. New Guinea Gold Limited is currently liaising with its lawyers who are preparing an application for its lease to be extended. In the meantime Sinivit mining activity is continuing

Sinivit Mine can be Accessed by Road or air

The Sinivit gold mine is located in the Baining Mountains of the Papua New Guinea Gazelle Peninsula in the East New Britain Province, 50 kilometres south-south west of Rabaul. The mine can be accesed by road, a one hour drive from Kokopo and the port at Rabaul. An airport is located at Kokopo that receives several flights a day from Lae and Port Moresby.

Gold Production Commenced at Sinivit in 2008
Commercial production of gold commenced at the Sinivit mine in April 2008 with the mining of the oxide cap consisting of quartz, gold, copper and telluride. The project is expected to have a reasonably short life although there is active exploration taking place with the aim of defining additional mineralisation.

Sinivit Mine Summary
Currently defined mineralisation is open at depth along with many other unexplored targets that could prove to have considerable potential to increase known mineralisation. The Sinivit mine can be summerised as follows:
1. Average unoxidised grade of the gold and telluride mineralisation is believed to be between 10 and 14 grams of gold per tonne
2. Mining and processing is a simple process with head grade oxide mineralisation of around five grams of gold a tonne with open pit mining and VAT leach processing
3. The ore mineralisation is primarily made up of gold, copper and telluride within the oxide cap. Mineralisation is open along strike as well as to depth
4. Gold resource has been defined near the surface along a length of one kilometre of the 10 kilometre structural zone. The structural zone is known to contain gold mineralisation along its entire length although this is largely untested to date

Sinivit Mine Tellurium has Many Important Uses

Tellurium, that is found along with gold at the Sinivit mine is used as an alloy with stainless steel and copper to make them more workable. It is also added to lead, at low levels, to lower its corrosive action when used in the presence of sulphuric acid in batteries. It also improves the hardness and strength of lead. Other uses of tellurium include it as a colouring agent for ceramics. Mixed with mercury and cadmium in the electronics industry it forms photosensitive semi-conductors. Cadmium telluride is used as a film on solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity. It is also used to vulcanise rubber and in blasting caps for explosives as well as for petroleum cracking. Samples of Sinivit tellurium have been sent to potential buyers in the United States to find out if it can be economically recovered at the Sinivit mine.
