About: The Scarborough Gas Project, is the farthest gas field in the Carnarvon Basin, located off the coast of northern Western Australia, 220 kilometres north west of Exmouth. It is owned as a joint venture operation between Esso Australia Resources Pty Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of ExxonMobile and BHP Billiton.

Scarborough Gas Field Discovered in 900 Metres of Water in 1979

The Scarborough gas field was discovered in 1979 in 900 metres of Australian controlled waters in the Indian Ocean. The project is under the management of ExxonMobil which is considering development of the field by use of a Floating Liquefied Gas (FLNG) processing, storage and gas off-loading facility.

Scarborough FLNG will Load Gas Tankers at Sea

The FLNG being proposed will be about 495 metres in length and 75 metres in width and be able to process between six and seven million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from five on-board processing trains. The FLNG, that will have a doubled hulled bottom and sides, will be permanently fixed to the seabed. The gas will be loaded onto visiting LNG carriers from a loading facility located behind the FLNG itself. It is estimated offloading of LNG will take place between six and nine times every month throughout the year.

Scarborough to Have a Total of 12 Production Wells

It is planned to drill 12 gas production wells within the Scarborough gas field in two phases. Phase one will involve the drilling of seven production wells between 2018 and 2019 with a further five wells to be drilled during the following 15 years after project start up. The drilling of these wells will be known as phase two. During 2019 and 2020 it is envisaged the installation of underwater infrastructure will take place. This installation will include the tie back of the production wells to the FLNG vessel as well as the installation of flowlines, risers and umbilicals. Scarborough Project commissioning is due to occur during 2019 and 2020 along with the offshore installation. LNG commercial gas production is expected to take place during the 2020/21 financial year and is expected to continue for the next 25 to 35 years.

The Scarborough gas field project, that will cover an area of around 30 hectares, approximately one percent of the total lease hold, contains between eight and 10 trillion cubic feet of lean gas with no measurable quantity of condensate. Because of this it is not expected the returns will contain any condensate.

Once the FLNG vessel is in place at the Scarborough gas field site, it will be connected to the seabed moorings and the turrent system, with the use of equipment, barges and support vessels specialised in this type of operation. The mooring lines themselves will consist of 24 steel chains anchored to either suction or impact piles anchored deep into the seabed. The piles will weigh between 140 and 180 tonnes each and be six metres in diameter. The FLNG vessel itself will be permanently moored at the site and designed to survive all weather conditions.

Scarborough Gas Project to Create up to 600 Jobs

The Scarborough gas project will require the employment of between 500 and 600 people on board whilst installation and commissioning is taking place. These people will be transferred to and from the shore to the FLNG by helicopter. It is expected this will require between five and seven flights a week throughout the entire installation and commissioning period.
