The Roy Hill open cut iron ore mining project is in Western Australia's Pilbara Region. It consists of a 55 million tonne a year iron ore mine as well as a 344 kilometre long privately owned railway and a new port at Port Hedland. It will also introduce a new dimension into the mining industry with it Perth based Remote Operations Centre (ROC) at its integrated corporate headquarters.
Roy Hill to Incorporate a Remote Operation Centre at its Corporate Headquarters
The location of the Remote Operation Centre at the company's corporate headquarters in Perth will bring together all the necessary corporate services functions, marketing and the mining operation itself. It is therefore expected create a fully integrated business that will optimise production, reliability and quality throughout the business.
Roy Hill Project's Major Shareholder is Hancock Prospecting
The Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd iron ore mining project is majority owned by Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (70 percent), Marubeni Corporation (15 percent), POSCO (12.5 percent) and China Steel Corporation (2.5 percent). The mine will have a life of mine of over 20 years and be owner operated when development in completed. It will be an open pit mining operation implementing a drilling and blasting, trucking and excavating method of bulk mining, with a strip ratio averaging four tonnes of waste and low grade mineralisation to recover one tonne of iron ore.
Roy Hill Strip Mining Method to be Similar to That of Coal Mining
The strip mining method to be used at the Roy Hill mine will be similar to the method used in open pit coal mining, where most of the waste and overburden is dumped back into the void created by the mining of the ore body. By doing this the operation will minimise carting waste rock un- necessary distances. It will also decrease the mining activity footprint. Rehabilitation of waste dumps are to be progressively completed during the life of the mine to ensure mined out areas are returned to their natural state as early as possible.
Roy Hill Mine to Become one of the Largest in the Pilbara
When completed, the Roy Hill mine will be one of the largest iron ore mines in the Pilbara Region, as it will be mining around 350 million tonnes material annually. This will include around 68 million tonnes a year of wet ROM (run-of-mine) ore.
Roy Hill Mine to Comprise Multiple Open Pits
The Roy Hill iron ore mine will involve the mining of many open pits at any one time. Each of these pits will be shallow and broad, the deepest pit being less than 110 metres in depth. There are to be crusher stations and ROM pads constructed adjacent to each open pit with the crushed ore taken to a central processing plant via a conveyor system. There will be three crushing stations operating at any one time to provide necessary flexibility of operation.
Modern Facilities and Technology to be Used at the Roy Hill Mining Operation
The Roy Hill open cut iron ore mine will also operate its own airport to fly its workers in and out of the mine site. There will be site access roads developed and an up to date fully equipped village capable of accommodating 1,200 contractors and staff.
The Roy Hill mine will be using the latest in technology that will include its remote operating control to give it a high level of automation that is expected to give it a reputation of producing a high grade quality iron ore supply that is reliable and sustainable, with low cost production methods.
