The Redbank open pit copper mine in the McArthur Basin Region of the Northern Territory is becoming a problem for the directors of Redbank Copper Limited as they are forced to address the decades of leaching from the previous workings at the site that has adversely effected nearby water courses.

Lack of Adequate Drainage Will Have to Come First When Restarting the Redbank Copper Mine

The company has been attempting to raise money to restart the old Redbank copper workings that will need considerable drainage improvements before economic production can once again get underway.

Redbank Copper Limited Began as Burdekin Resources
Redbank Copper Limited began as Burdekin Resources and was created as an exploration company in 1993. It was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) late in 1993 and changed its name to Burdekin Pacific Limited in 2000. In 2002 it decided to focus its activities on mineral resource exploration and development. In late 2005 Burdekin acquired the Redbank Copper Project in the Northern Territory and changed its name to Redbank Copper Limited.
The acquisition of the Redbank Copper Project brought with it the following assets:

A 1,150 metre long airstrip within the licence area and only two kilometres from the mining camp and mine administrative building. The airfield is in need of repair mainly the provision of an improved storm water drainage system and re-compacting of the gravel surface.

All roads to and from the mine have been constructed with gravel surfaces but are not passable during the wet season. The upgrading of the roads in and out of the Redbank Mine will be treated as urgent along with certain bridgeworks.

A mining camp and administrative building are already on site. The camp area that can accommodate up to 14 personnel at any one time, consists of en-suite and ablution block. The company is planning the upgrading of the camp area as soon as construction and production gets underway.

There is a Telstra tower on site which gives fax, telephone and internet services.
Bore water is available for the camp accommodation purposes, although water can also be sourced from the Sandy Flat open pit. When this supply is depleted another source will have to be found.

There are two diesel powered generators, one to supply power to the mine site and the other to satisfy camp requirements.

A septic tank system is in place and in working order.

A processing plant, conveyor system, flotation, mixing tanks, thickener, precipitation column, ROM pad, tailings storage and workshops are all intact, although the mill grinding circuit has been removed. The company is examining the feasibility of constructing a new processing plant in preference to restoring the existing plant.

Redbank Copper Limited is looking at processing the copper ore by crushing and then leaching with sulphuric acid. This method produces a copper cement that contains 85 to 90 percent copper. Another method it is considering is by means of copper cathode which returns 99.9 percent copper, if they can justify the cost of providing a solvent extraction electrowinning plant. Copper is the metal of main interest at this early stage although the company remains conscious of the presence of gold, silver, lead zinc, cobalt, uranium, manganese and phosphates also existing in the tenement area.

Redbank Copper

RedBank Copper was established in April 1993, the company was formed as a mineral exploration company, and was listed on a Australian stock exchange as Burdekin resources limited, in December 1993. April 2000 it changed to Burdekin pacific limited, in 2000 and 2001 finanical years the more
