About: The Ravensworth Narama black coal mine in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales is located only two kilometres from the now closed Ravensworth West mine. Both are fully owned by global mining company, Xstrata, and together make up the Ravensworth Complex.

Coal Mining has Taken Place at Ravensworth Since 1972
Coal mining first began in the Ravensworth area in 1972 when the Ravensworth Number Two open cut mine was commissioned to produce coal for Pacific Power, formally known as the Electricity Commission of NSW, and now known as Macquarie Generation. Xstrata wholly purchased the Ravensworth Narama open cut coal mine from its joint venture partner, Iluka Resources, in 2007. The mine at that time was producing 2.5 million tonnes of run of mine (ROM) black coal annually and employed 119 people. In 1990 Ravensworth entered into a contract with the Electricity Commission of New South Wales, to supply two million tonnes of thermal coal to the Commission annually for the following 20 years. In 1991 approval was granted for the mine to produce 2.2 million tonnes of coal annually for the next 21 years.

Ravensworth Narama Mine Contains Seven Coal Seams
Black thermal coal mined at the Ravensworth Narama open cut is taken from seven separate coal seams. These are; Bayswater, Ravensworth R1 and R2, V1/2, Vo, Vx and Vaux. All the seams are part of the Jerry's Plains sub group belonging to the Whittington coal measures. The coal being removed by the conventional method of dragline, truck and shovel. The dragline being the principal means of stripping the overburden. The coal itself is extracted by means of a front-end loader that is used to load up the haulage trucks that take it to the coal crushing facility. From the crusher it's taken by conveyor to the Liddell and Bayswater power stations.

Production at the Narama Mine Extended to 2016
Approval was granted in October 2008 for certain modifications to be made to the infrastructure to allow production to be increased to 3.5 million tonnes a year on a short term basis to allow the mine to meet specific production requirements. In July 2009 an application was granted to modify the original development consent that was due to expire in 2012. The modification allowed for the Narama Extended Project to get underway . This extension involved the development of the mine to take place further east of the already approved operations along with any necessary infrastructure works. These changes allows for the mine to continue producing up until 2016.

Ravensworth North set to Take Over From Ravensworth Narama

The Ravensworth Surface Operations (RSO) is responsible for the operation of the Narama and Ravensworth North open cut mines along with the nearby Cummock Mine a former underground and open cut coal mine that is now under care and maintenance. The Ravensworth West mine that was closed in 2011 began producing coal for the group in April 2006. Mining began at the Ravensworth North mine in April 2012 with the first coal being extracted a month later in May 2012. The Ravensworth Narama and Ravensworth North mines are now able to produce 16 million tonnes of ROM coal a year and the group is now exporting as well as supplying coal to the Macquarie Generation for domestic power supply.

Note- GlencoreXstrata was formed following a merger of Glencore International and Xstrata, the merger was completed in May 2013. But a decision was made by the Company's shareholders during the annual general meeting and the announcement was made in May 2014 that Glencore will drop Xstrata and be simply known as Glencore.rn

Glencore dates back to 1974 as Marc Rich & Co, focused on minerals, metals and crude oil. In the 1980's Glencore added coal to their portfolio. Glencore is one of the worlds largest natural resource companies with more than 90 offices in over 50 countries, over 150 mining and metallurgical more
