About: The Ravensworth East open cut coal mine is part of Glencore Coal Australia's Mount Owen Complex. It was previously known as the Swamp Creek Mine. The Ravensworth East Mine is located 25 kilometres north west of Singleton and 26 kilometres south east of Muswellbrook in the Upper Hunter Valley Region of New South Wales. The mine is located within the Hunter Coalfields at Hebden.

Ravensworth East Mine Previously Known as the Swamp Creek Coal Mine

When the Ravensworth East coal mine was known as the Swamp Creek Mine it was owned and operated by the Hebden Mining Company, however, mining ceased at the Swamp Creek Mine in 1991 when the Hebden Mining Company ran out of contracts. The mine was then placed on care and maintenance.

Ravensworth East Mine Acquired by Xstrata Coal in 2002

The Ravensworth East Coal Mine was granted development approval in early 2000 that allowed the mine to re-open and produce up to four million tonnes of ROM (Run-of-Mine) coal a year. Xstrata Coal purchased the Ravensworth East open cut mine in 2002 and included it as part of its greater Mount Owen Complex in 2004. Its management is provided by Glendell Tenements Pty Ltd and its mining activities undertaken by Glencore Coal Australia Pty Ltd.

Ravensworth East Mine Part of the Greater Mount Owen Complex

The Ravensworth East open cut coal mine uses facilities shared with the Mount Owen and the Gendell mines that are also part of the Mount Owen complex. The shared facilities include the state-of-art CHPP (coal handling and preparation plant) that is the mainstay of the entire complex. The site infrastructure is inovatively designed to make maximum use of modern technology and automation and as such has become a benchmark within the coal industry generally.

Mining at the Ravensworth East Mine is undertaken by large excavators and a fleet of haulage trucks including drills, loaders, fuel and service carts, graders, dozers and water carts. Coal mined from the Ravensworth East Mine is export quality thermal coal that is mostly exported to Asian countries.

The Ravensworth East mining procedure requires the clearing of vegetation and top soil in the first instance, to allow access to the overburden that is then drilled and blasted, before it is excavated and hauled away to expose the coal seam. The uncovered coal is then excavated and taken to the CHPP for processing. Once cleaned the coal is then railed 120 kilometres to the Newcastle Port for exporting to the company's overseas customers.

Exposed coal is extracted with the use of excavators that load it into rear dump trucks that take it to the ROM receival point situated near the CHPP.

Because of its design most of the ROM coal that arrives at the CHPP is fed directly into the processing plant and doesn't require stockpiling. The CHPP can handle up to 15 million tonnes of ROM coal a year. 10 million tonnes is supplied from the Mount Owen operation and five million tonnes from the Glendell and Ravensworth East open pits.
