About: The OK Tedi copper, silver and gold mine, that is located in the Star Mountains region of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, has been given a last minute lifeline with the mine being fully acquired by the Papua New Guinea Government. As the mine was being prepared for closure after 2010, the Papua New Guinea Government stepped in and in 2013 seized 100 percent ownership, guaranteeing it a productive life until at least 2025.

OK Tedi Lifeline Saves 400 Jobs

The governments last minute purchase of the OK Tedi mine saved the jobs of around 400 workers who are employed at the mine at any one time. The PNG government's take over of the OK Tedi mine was endorsed by the residents of 156 near-by villages who agreed to the signing of respective Community Mine Continuation Extension Agreements by their community representatives and OK Tedi Mining Limited.

OK Tedi Mine Owned and Operated by BHP Billiton Until 2002

The OK Tedi mine had been owned and operated by multinational mining company BHP Billiton until 2002, when it vested its interests in the mine to PNGSDP (Papua New Guinea Sustainable Development Program). In 2012, OK Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) became a company in its own right. OTML became a state owned enterprise in 2013.

The OK Tedi mine is operated as an open cut operation mining around 80,000 tonnes of overburden and 78,000 tonnes of ore a day. Both mine and processing mill operate 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The pit covers an area of 2.6 kilometres.

Copper Discovered at OK Tedi Minesite in 1969

Copper mineralisation was discovered to exist at Mt Fubilan in 1963 but it was not until 1969 before the mineralisation was found to extend to the present mine site. OK Tedi Mining Limited was formed to mine the copper at the site in 1981.

Mining at OK Tedi Undertaken in Conventional Manner

Mining is undertaken at the OK Tedi mine in the conventional drilling and blasting method with the use of four caterpillar 6030 excavators and four Caterpillar 6050 shovels that load a fleet of haulage trucks that comprise six 789C and 36 793F Caterpillar trucks. Production drilling is carried out with the use of Pit Viper drills to depths of 16 metres. Blast holes are all single primed with wet emulsion explosives. The ore is crushed at a rate of 8,000 tonnes an hour in a primary crusher before being conveyed to a primary ore stockpile. In 2014, the OK Tedi mine mined over 73 million tonnes of material to recover 20 million tonnes of ore.

Underground Activity Started at OK Tedi Mine in 2009

Underground operations began at the Ok Tedi mine in late 2009 with the cutting of two portals in the Mt Fubilan pit for exploration purposes. These two exploration portals named Gold Coast and Paris, were finished in 2011. Drainage tunnels were also completed in 2011 and work continued into 2012 with the development of a 200 metre escape way, as well as drives for resource diamond drilling and geotechnical purposes. In 2013 and 2014 underground workings at the OK Tedi mine included an exploration drive south to provide dewatering of the Harvey Creek cave system and North West extension workings linking the West Wall cutback. An incline is currently being developed to provide a fourth dewatering shaft to create drainage of the Fubilan open pit. Underground mining is undertaken using handheld air-legs and two 1300 Elphinstone loaders. Mullock is taken to the surface by 21 tonne Schoma locomotives pulling four skips.
