The Narrabri Gas Project, in north west New South Wales, being proposed by Santos, has received its final approval from the Australian Federal Government and although it is still waiting on a range of approvals from the New South Wales government, Santos have now decided to begin coal seam gas exploration of the area.

Narrabri Gas Project to Start With a Drilling Fluids Treatment Facility
One of the Narrabri Gas Project's first constructions is to be a drilling fluids treatment facility at Narrabri. The immediate ongoing program is to include the drilling of 15 appraisal wells along with the recommencement of their existing pilot wells, the building of associated flowlines and the commissioning of water storage facilities. The Narrabri Gas Project's drilling fluids treatment facility, is located on land zoned 'rural,' outside of the Narrabri town boundary. The facility will recycle fluids that have been used in the projects exploration drilling activities.

Santos Acquired Narrabri Gas Project From Eastern Star Gas
Santos acquired the Narrabri Gas project from Eastern Star Gas in 2011 after Eastern Star had cleared some of the Pilliga Scrub, a New South Wales State Forest that constitutes around 3,000 square kilometres of semi- arid woodland. Despite considerable opposition from environmental groups, Santos feels vindicated in that the federal government approval to go ahead with the project means there has not been any significant impact on any matters of national environmental significance following on from earlier Eastern Star activities in the area.

Narrabri Gas Project to Make NSW Less Reliant on Queensland CSG
Santos is developing its coal seam gas reserves in the Narrabri area to enable it to provide a source of natural gas for New South Wales that is currently being provided by Queensland based coal seam gas fields. Coal seam natural gas now accounts for about 90 percent of Queensland's gas supply and 30 percent of the gas demand from the wider east coast of Australia. New South Wales is presently receiving over 95 percent of its natural gas requirement from interstate sources. Santos is at the forefront of this growth being a coal seam gas industry leader in its own right with over 50 years experience.

Narrabri Gas Project Details
The Narrabri Gas Project is believed to contain sufficient gas reserves to supply New South Wales power stations, industrial, commercial and domestic gas users with up to 50 percent of their total gas requirements into the future. The Narrabri Gas Project details are as follows:

The project will give the local Narrabri area, the wider regional area and the New South Wales economy a significant benefit, in that it will employ around 1,200 people during its construction stage and 200 personnel when operational
The gas will be taken from the Narrabri gas field via a new pipeline running south, to supply the New South Wales market
The Narrabri Gas Project, when completed, is expected to be able to produce 200 terajoules of natural gas a day (50 percent of the state's needs)
The field operation will use less than one percent of the actual project area. The areas located within the Pilliga State Forest will be limited to areas zoned by the government for natural gas development.
The total project area covers 98,000 hectares

Santos has been extracting coal seam gas in Queensland for over 20 years
and have been working with rural communities since it was established in South Australia nearly 60 years ago. It is now one of Australia's largest domestic natural gas producers.

Santos is one of Australia's largest producers of oil and gas, to the domestic market. Its name is an acronym for South Australia Northern Territory Oil Search.Santos' first discovery of gas was in he Cooper Basin in 1963. Today the Cooper Basin contains around 190 gas fields and 115 oil more
